whenever anyone seem to believe that homeless people that might be mentally unwell are divinely evil and they Must Be Taken Care Of to ensure societal peace, i just wish they’d ask themselves why they think homeless people want to be homeless

At a certain point, I think it’s easier for them to stomach. If you don’t believe a homeless person did something to deserve it, then you might have to ask yourself tough questions like “how can I help this person?” or maybe even broader questions like “what kindness do I owe a total stranger?”

“Why is my ‘nice’ neighborhood such an epicenter of human misery? Why do my ‘nice’ neighbors look away or say horrible things about people who are clearly suffering? Can I really think of myself as a fundamentally good person if I laughed along with them?”

Things people have told me are the real reason some folks "choose" homelessness: -Easier to do drugs all the time -They like the "freedom" -They're modern-day nomads -They're a specific sub-set of the Sovereign Citizen movement Of course none of the people telling me these were homeless themselves

Growing up my mom told me that all the homeless people we’d see on the side of the road asking for change were grifters who all lived in houses the next town over and just did that to con people out of money

surely investing in social services / flat-out giving unhoused people money and access to secure housing won't fix the problem, except for in all the documented instances that it has and does no! we must instead give the cops military drones and make prisons bigger :)

Related: do they really think alleged benefits and aid in cities are so good people are coming from out of state to be homeless? Can they really not conceive that their neighbors are losing housing/being priced or forced out?

I think what's more infuriating than people thinking it's a choice is people thinking all homeless people are faking being homeless people because "you don't see them during the winter". Yeah cause that's code blue season, they're crammed into a shelter like a sardine so they don't freeze to death

Because being homeless is the "easy route" according to many of the assholes I've had this conversation with. There's a whole swath of middle-class people who honestly seem to think that folk chose to be homeless because it's the coward's way out compared to the challenges of being employed.

This of course ignores that a huge portion of people experiencing homelessness ARE employed, and that being homeless is fucking awful and very difficult to dig out of without outside support. It's like able-bodied people telling wheelchair users they envy them for always having a place to sit down.

on more than one occasion i have heard from these types that they believe homeless people are lazy. one guy actually claimed that they did it because the homeless were making upwards of 30-40k a year panhandling and i barked in his face like a seal laughing. i could not help it

mentally ill homeless doordash driver here, ama shelters won't take me because my ADHD medication, which I need to actually operate, is fucking meth.

The state of mental health care in the US is appalling. The Dallas County jail has more mentally ill inmates on any given night than all the in patient mental health beds in the state. And anyone can refuse treatment, no matter if their illness causes them to reject needed help.

Usually something about how they can totally make 6 figures begging for change on the sidewalk or getting free checks from the government or something. Idk, conservatives believe in a lot of social programs that are not real.

the more fire an brimstone types attribute any bad fortune to 'evil' types as affirming that they are white Jesus's children. homeless people = evil = they deserve it and once homeless 'earn' their evil tag what they want is irrelevant
