i think the big data center backlash has a lot to do with technology getting worse, costing more, building a surveillance state, destroying the environment, owned by a class of wealthy elite that coalesced behind the fascist regime that made clear they’d sacrifice humanity for their own power growth

I can't repair any of my devices. I don't own any of my media except for paperbacks. The internet is getting tangibly worse by the fuckin' day. But please subject us to poison water and mass surveillance. I just so badly need unmaintainable code, and images of burgers that look like bugs and cum.

it's also a physical manifestation of big tech. like, you made a giant box does surveillance, child porn generation, and psychosis affliction and you put it up in a day while cackling about the social harm you're doing, and you're surprised people resent that?

I think it also has to do with tech bros getting tax breaks for building giant factories that raise power bills, deplete water tables, foul nearby recreation areas, make constant loud noise, demolish property values, & provide no lasting jobs. It's a lose-lose to any community they inflict them on.

They are also incredibly destructive to the properties near them. So some very white, wealthy rural types suddenly have brown water, no water pressure, a massive ugly eyesore, and sinkholes. Turns out it sucks for their property values too.

The funny thing is they really don’t have to have most of these problems. They’re always going to use a lot of power but everything else can be mitigated. But building them in a way that doesn’t destroy the surrounding area costs more money and time and that’s not compatible with “hyper scaling”

Also how like for years yimby folks have been begging their cities to build literally any infrastructure and seen miles of red tape and then those same cities decide to donate land and give huge tax breaks for these monstrosities ... like oh so we can build things then

i’ve been seeing a lot of dem aligned centrists “really confused” at where the modern tech backlash came from and its astonishing to me they’re pretending to be confused by this. its obvious if you’ve paid attention to politics since like 2023!

Its also wild because have they been listening to the AI CEO's? They're out there gloating that they're going to make workers obsolete, and they're going to make women obsolete with their AI girlfriends, and just being generally atrocious humans. How could you not hate them?

i used to think "what's wrong with being centrist" and then seeing more and more they're just reticent right wing has radicalized me.

Well theyre paid to be confused about it, so that tracks tbh. The centrists whole job is to look at what fascists are doing and go "aww shucks, its really complex, I could t begin to explain or understand it. but im pretty sure this is the lefts fault."

Yeah... We've been kinda pissed about the whole rich arseholes destroying the world in the name of increasing their personal "wealth" for quite some time now. And SURPRISE most of them are doing that with bullshit tech they're trying to stuff down our throats.

It's not even tech backlash! It's just *shitty* tech backlash. I loathe "AI" and its datacenters more than words can express, but when I see news about mRNA treatments, robotics that *aren't* pretending to be humanoid just for hype points, and other actual advancements, I get as excited as anyone.

I just don't see any explanation for the lack of understanding other than being deliberately involved in the consultancy and donor ecosystem, or only talking to people who are. Like literally why would they be surprised, especially if you pay attention to politics *as a job*!

Centrists never see it coming from either side because centrism is the politics of the comfortable. Well, we ain’t comfortable anymore.

Every time there's an update, they are trying to steer you to their version of reality or companies who benefit financially from the misdirection attached to their search engines. Also most often uodates are not user friendly.

The broligarchy seems to think they can convince people to like them if they can get the public to understand just how cool the lives of the broligarchs will be when everyone else is dying in concentration camps.

I keep having people tell me I don't understand the data center need. I'm a security engineer who hates almost every piece of tech I'm forced to work with. I"m so deeply informed.

Its wild how much less resistance they would get if they offered more people a bigger cut of the pie, but they are pathologically incapable of peeling a few bucks off their billions

Yes, but aside from technology getting worse, costing more, building a surveillance state, destroying the environment, and being owned by a wealthy elite who support a fascist regime willing to sacrifice humanity for their own power, what are the specific objections to data centers? /John_Cleese

So,they'll see it simply as a public relations issue-buy a shitload of ad time and donate a ton more $'s to key politicians and back on track for big data...right?

To add to costing more, data centers use a crazy amount of power. Throw in the environmental concerns, the few long term jobs it makes, the noise, and local politicians doing shit like arresting protesters for going seconds over a 2 minute allotment at council meetings, its the perfect pr disaster

A massive amount of random data has been collected on us all for years, especially since the advance of the internet and smartphones. AI will undoubtedly be used to convert that mass of data into meaningful information. Remember the old quote: Knowledge is Power? That's what this is all about.
