really a pretty embarrassing few fucking weeks for Bluesky content moderation and what passes for a comms team

he's a comedian obviously making a joke? is his suspension permanent? Why isn't there a staggered warning system? Hello? Is this thing on?

like I get being strict on comments about violence against women (even though he's not actually advocating anybody actually turn Megyn Kelly into garden mulch), but shouldn't there be a graded strike-warning system? also shouldn't comms be better surrounding high profile moderation choices?

Yeah. I can see a reasonable moderation system in which this crosses the line, but boy do they need to communicate better and be more transparent.

I get being strict on violence against women comments, but at least be aware you're making a prominent content moderation move and have a comms team ready to explain things to people? And why isn't there a three-strikes sort of thing? Was he warned? Why directly to a suspension?

the mod tools for bksy are pretty blunt, for lack of a better word. i'm pretty sure it's something they've been working on. but, also, the most consistent rule they enforce around here is 'no figurative death threats'! it keeps happening!

so if he just said something like Megyn Kelley was "hoisted by her own petard" all would be cool? Of course a petard is a small bomb which, like a wood chipper, could lead to significant injury

I think it evident that the 'management' team, such as it is, still considers this a toy or is angling to be bought by one of the tech brunchlords.

I can't stand Megyn Kelly, and what she said was reprehensible. Comedian or not though, you can't suggest bloody murder on social media, and not expect consequences. There are rules about such things.

oh my domain I registered with Bluesky expired because I forgot, and they have no alert system set up and no auto-renewal option for domain payments

It's become harder to defend them on this front lately. "Moderation at scale is difficult" and all but there's a bit too many odd choices.

they really need a strong, working comms team that can effectively communicate choices and argue for reversals when things are getting ugly

The fact I only ever hear about this from outrage posting is not great. The CEO's crash out not long ago also was another sign they gotta be grown ups now and defer to a comms team.

having developers and programmers randomly comment complex social interactions is just not good I know techies think this can all be automated, but public communications is an actual skill

I hate to be the one to break it to all of you people whining, and bitching about blue sky and its moderation team…. You can say virtually anything you want on this platform unless you literately advocate killing someone. The only time I got banned was when I suggested killing the fat orange zombie

i got a suspension for telling a transphobe they make the world a worse place. no threats, just telling them they're a bad person. moderation on this platform is an utter joke.

That comment is a clear violation of Bluesky terms of service. I assume the moderation team received a lot of complaints about it. If I had seen it I would have reported it too. Murder by woodchipper was shockingly violent when it referred to USAID, and even more so "joking" about an individual.
