One you might find surprising. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt & members of her team have been extremely helpful in responding to questions I raise. Regardless of public facing commentary, privately they are willing to engage and address questions. And I have appreciated that. Thank you

Why is it bad to praise a populist spox specifically for being helpful with requests from press? Some are helpful. Most ignore the non-right-wing/captive press. It’s better when they are helpful. Whether they lie or behave reprehensibly in other ways is a separate question.

why is it bad to normalize and validate a christofascist propagandist who lies constantly and whose boss has murdered millions of people through corruption and racism by saying she's nice in private? Is this a real question?

We deal with a lot of far-right parties whose politics we find awful. We have to contact their spoxes to report on them. Some of those spoxes respond, confirm info, get interviews etc. Others ignore us. On that narrow dimension, it is good for the public if they respond rather than ignore.

I feel you are completely missing the point. none of what you just said is in contention or up for debate. I genuinely don't think you guys understand why popping on bluesky to give an "attaboy" to a christofascist propagandist for a brutal regime is, at VERY BEST INTERPRETATION, tone deaf

I can’t speak for what OP meant by the post, but I could have imagined writing something similar about a departing official from a European hard-right party in order to publicly encourage that sort of openness by such parties. I feel like people get piled on here undeservedly.

I have friends that operate like this and I don’t know how to get beyond their lifelong conditioning that politeness on the outward facing mask is the important part of social functioning.

If your job is reporting What Is Happening, you get that the bar is (or should be) *truthful*, not *helpful*? Thanking a departing official for their openness after they’ve lied to your face for over a year is pathetic. You do see that? It’s kinda making us all a bit crazy.

lol … come on, Mr Steinglass. What is there about ANY far-right regime currently in power that makes you think they’d try to improve — especially thanks to a complimentary press??

Leavitt spent January calling myself & my neighbors domestic terrorists and defending the abduction, torture, rape, and murder of other neighbors, including children. What "openness" in this political rhetoric and positioning do you feel merits praise? She is quite explicitly a lying propagandist.

That’s true but you really are missing the point here. We see politicians lying and reporters overwhelmingly reprinting those lies as plausible or simply unchallenged. Then we see reporters thanking the liars for making it easier to print their political spins. And we lose faith in the reporters.

Oh gosh. You're an editor for the Economist. I just shake my head. Even if she tells you things, how can you know they are the truth when all she does is lie in public. You're basically okay with thanking Sauron's mouth for answering questions while not on camera lying to the masses.

What's wrong with simply observing that the Führer loved dogs? 🙄 I'd also reject the very notion that Leavitt ever, at any point in time during her tenure, provided any service or info that was of any value to "the public," as opposed to the usual self-serving agitprop slop this regime extrudes.
