One you might find surprising. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt & members of her team have been extremely helpful in responding to questions I raise. Regardless of public facing commentary, privately they are willing to engage and address questions. And I have appreciated that. Thank you

Why is it bad to praise a populist spox specifically for being helpful with requests from press? Some are helpful. Most ignore the non-right-wing/captive press. It’s better when they are helpful. Whether they lie or behave reprehensibly in other ways is a separate question.

why is it bad to normalize and validate a christofascist propagandist who lies constantly and whose boss has murdered millions of people through corruption and racism by saying she's nice in private? Is this a real question?

We deal with a lot of far-right parties whose politics we find awful. We have to contact their spoxes to report on them. Some of those spoxes respond, confirm info, get interviews etc. Others ignore us. On that narrow dimension, it is good for the public if they respond rather than ignore.

If they're responding its because its to their advantage. That should be obvious. They don't care about you, you're just another way to push their agenda.

I feel you are completely missing the point. none of what you just said is in contention or up for debate. I genuinely don't think you guys understand why popping on bluesky to give an "attaboy" to a christofascist propagandist for a brutal regime is, at VERY BEST INTERPRETATION, tone deaf

As a member of the public, I would prefer politicians’ staff to ignore journalists than feed them lies that those journalists promptly print without fact checking them. Literally nothing in the arrangement you mentioned benefits the public in any way.

No there are things they could say that would be worse than ignoring you especially when they know they're getting a free mouthpiece of press-laundering. If Goebbels gave you a comment that was a screed on the diseases of The Jew would you print it as the government's comment?

I don’t think this is a matter of being nice in private; it’s not private. It’s a matter of performing their job in a way that respects the independent press and people who didn’t vote for them. Seems fine to me to encourage this specific behavior.

They're lying to you, AT BEST, and going "I'm glad the person who publicly humiliates the press that Trump has despised since his campaign in 2016", AFTER THE NYT OFFICE WAS RAIDED BY THIS ADMIN, is somewhere between dereliction of duty and being a worthless stenographer for oppression.

It's cute you keep saying propagandist by spelling it 'spox', what a really neat, cute little term that is, makes it seem friendly and not all scary like 'propagandist', you know, the people literally trained & intent on spreading their message. Almost makes them seem quirky, the public likes quirky

There is something fundamentally wrong with you lot. Everyone understands the ethics of journalism except for you actual journalists.

How they treat YOU personally is irrelevant. The fact that Leavitt lies 24x7 is the point. No one gives a shit if she's nice to you. They care that she lies in service to fascism. The press does little to counter that. THAT'S the problem, sir. The fact that you don't get this is diturbing.

Crazy thought here, but you could report on how fucking two faced they are in real time. But I get it, don’t implant yourself into the story and just let lunatics spout lies all the time. You wear that crown.

The annoying thing is you're fundamentally not understanding why they respond - they consider you a means to an end. They will use you while they need to and then abandon you when your use has expired. Did you learn nothing from the media excluded last year for political purposes?

So you'll support the praise the christofacist liars like Levitt because they were "responsive"? Answering questions is in her effig job description and just because others are worse at being nice when they lie to your face, it doesn't make her publicly praiseworthy.

How is that good for the public? If people who are actively spreading misinformation and hate are friendly and helpful to you when you write articles about their misinformation and hate, how does that benefit the public? All it does is normalize them even further

Do you even understand that a spokesperson’s actual job is to manipulate you? They are often professionally trained to do this. They are much better at their jobs than you are, and are paid more because of it.

This is naive. You’re referencing people who don’t engage in good faith. This is the “paradox of tolerance”, except it’s not a paradox if you realize tolerance is a peace treaty, not a moral precept. When they’ve broken the treaty in one venue, you don’t show tolerance in another; you blockade them.

It’s not a separate question. Being helpful and polite in providing lies and fascist propaganda to the press is not something to place in the “this is good” box.

What if that separate question is ACTUALLY super important, though? Don't you think whether or not a person is a complete monster and has done serious, measurable harm is way more important than how happy she was to take your calls?

That's actually just pissing me off. They're mostly what you would expect except a few that were probably click happy. Someone make a list for me lol

Brunch has taken on the connotation of treating the fascist regime as an annoyance, rather than both a symptom and rapid accelerant of fundamental national decline. Like "ugh, I can't wait until we vote these jokers out and get back to brunch." There was a specific tweet, can't seem to find it.

I do not want to have to think about politics all the time. I would much prefer to have good competent people running the government so I could enjoy a weekend meal with friends without worrying what the government is doing. Why is this bad?

I'd certainly like that to be the case myself. Unfortunately competence is not the only factor--those in power generally have different interests than those they claim to represent. Democracy requires active participation that is often antagonistic.
