JRR Tolkien is a true genius for fantasy but naming his two villains "Sauron" and "Saruman" was a miss imo

Head cannon is that the fellowship (a group of 5ish different species that speaks 5+ languages between them) settled on two similar names out of the myriad names and titles the Dark Lord and White Wizard have because it confused the hobbits least.

And don't get me started on Tengwar--it's damn near impossible to read because all the letters look the same. One big irony of conlangs is that the more organized we try to make one, the less useful in practice it becomes (because humans are messy and lazy and inconsistent).

If in the first act you have hung a symbolic syllable on the wall, then in the following one it should reveal its significance. Otherwise don't put it there. — Chekov, probably

I like the two names a lot but I agree that together it makes them very confusing. The 70s animated Lord of the Rings even changed Saruman’s name to “Aruman” to prevent audience confusion

I leaning towards Sauron being the name that gets to stay. For the movies, they should've just rolled with "Christopher Lee" and have everybody straight face it.
