Headline: 'Kemi will cut £200 off bills by drilling in North Sea'. Actual quote: 'I'm not saying it's going to go onto your bills'. @mrjamesob.bsky.social wants to know what's going on with the 'drill baby drill' brigade.

New drilling will not lower bills. It will boost corporate profits. What's poorly understood is that the UK offers such generous subsidies for new capital investment in the n.sea that it could result (eg if oil price drops below $70pb) in a huge (one estimate is £500 million) COST to the Exchequer

If the Tories and Reform want secure British gas that will last a few years instead of a few months. They need to do three things. 1. nationalise the North Sea gas production. 2. fully support the rapid deployment of heat pumps to replace gas central heating. 3. similarly fully support EVs.

The fact is that electrification will reduce gas consumption and prolong the life of British fuel resources, as well as reduce carbon emissions. Currently the Tories and Reform want to burn our bridges.

BREAKING: Iran wiped out 200,000 devices from the largest US medical service providers, USD 25 billion turnover company. This shows alarming state of security in some orgs, even minimal social engineering tactics allow bad actors to bypass the need for actual hacking. 🤦‍♂️ youtu.be/KHwILMPyq60?...

A bit blinkered. There will be environmental costs regardless - probably more on imported gas. Plus, north sea supplies generate billions in tax revenues too. Not ideal, but if we need short/medium term supply may as well use the gas off our own shores.

Seems unfair to say that there'll be environmental costs regardless. The Norwegians and other countries are unlikely to stop their operations just because we start drilling. So the ecological impact will probably be in addition to, not instead of, damage elsewhere.
