🚨BREAKING🚨 MPs have voted to PASS our bill to establish a UK-EU customs union. The Prime Minister must now listen to his own MPs, drop his self-imposed red lines and finally go for proper growth through an ambitious trade deal with the EU.

By the looks of it, it was a 10 Minute Bill, which appears to be one of those pointless pieces of arcania that our parliament excels in, and by convention the governing party usually doesn't bother to vote on them. So good on Ed for fighting the good fight, but I don't see it leading to anything.

🤣🤣🤣 500 vs 0 - but it ain't going to happen! It suggests it's 100 / 100 and Deputy Speaker voted aye so it could be discussed further. Yes I added up 100/101 so either I miscounted or Parliaments website has it wrong.

I thought you were sensible but it is rapidly becoming clear you should never be let anywhere near power. Government is difficult and doesn’t need people pulling silly stunts like this.

Are Lib Dems really suggesting that a customs union arrangement for goods would amount to being an ambitious trade deal for UK? Please start listening to the trade experts who have come out questioning the practicalities of implementing this policy. How is it a step towards joining Single Market/EU?

It's a pity that MPs would rather push a CU than have an honest debate on what it would really take to get UK back into Single Market and EU. It becomes a huge distraction as Government are negotiating an SPS agreement, youth mobility and go into a technical review next year.

A customs union is a different thing to the single market. (Norway and Iceland are in the single market but not the customs union, while I think Turkey has a customs agreement but isn't part of the single market) Both are important in different ways.

A customs union ties UK to some tariffs on goods, but not all. Declarations, checks and regulatory barriers are not removed either without other agreements in place. As for harmonising trade deals, UK would still be negotiating for itself whilst being tied to EU trade policy.

This isnt about the practicalities, just as the Brexiters werent about practicalities. This is about forcing Labour back to the centre on European policy and enabling a closer relationship. Call it a non meaningful meaningful vote that Labour abstained on when the Tories were in power.

I'm Jurrasic Labour - and if I'd have been in a position to vote on this I'd have voted for the motion. I do wonder if we went down this road how the range of EU nations would respond. I suspect Hungary might veto it as things stand. Still probably a fair way off.

I can see how they might have rethought their desire for an exception to the Single Market to be made. I commend the 13 Labour MPs who gave this a majority of 1 (Government abstained) to take this to a first reading. Expect no EU response unless it becomes an Act of Parliament.

What has turned out well re:Brexit? I can't think of a single benefit. Millions of losses but no benefits. So of course Brexit needs to be undone ASAP. First step is to get this govt to drop the red lines, or replace the govt.

So were all the previous brexit votes which were non binding but it was a way of forcing pressure on the govt to then do binding stuff. Labour is fucked unless it engages with the majority of its voters who are pro EU

If Farage hadn't had been away - yet again - the vote would have been lost. But then, F1 and the Ashes are more appealing to him than being in the House, or even worse, in Clacton!
