Also, this really shouldn't be news by now, but a promise on IHT is a promise to about 4% of the electorate. It's only because our media is owned by people who fall into that bracket that anyone has been persuaded to care.

Oxford - please join another unity march against the far right. 12pm Manzil Way, Sat 17th October. It's really important that we show them 'there are many many more of us than you'. The first unity march last autumn was a really joyful event, music, drums and a positive welcome all along Cowley Rd

Clive Lewis’s penultimate paragraph in this article is a neat summary of what has to happen if we want to preserve democracy in the UK.

Prem Sikka@premnsikka.bsky.social

Tom Watson’s move to Palantir is the latest sign of how far the rot has spread in UK politics. Like Blair, Cameron, Clegg, Mandelson, hired to open govt networks to companies and corporate capture of the state. They sell political capital built with public money. What do we get in return?

Gill Kimber reposted

This is pitiful. Allowing the very thing it claims to condemn because it is too cowardly and self-interested to support that which would stop it.

NEW - Joint statement agreed by the trade unions at TUC Congress, but stops short of calls for a cap on donations.

I was asked "What do other countries do about big money in politics?" Canada is a useful case study as their parliamentary system closely mirrors the UK's (for obvious reasons) - except they've totally clamped down on mega-donations.

Josiah Mortimer@josiahmortimer.bsky.social

Canada has a total ban on company/corporate donations. Only individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents can make contributions and it's capped at $1,750 a year. They still have functioning parties and the sky hasn't fallen in. Quite the opposite... www.elections.ca/content.aspx...

Danny Tommo (real name Daniel Thomas) was stopped driving someone else’s car without insurance and, naturally, calls it persecution. The police car had ANPR. His plate flagged. He was stopped using TPAC. That’s not persecution. It's the system working. And "I'm on my way to church” doesn't wash.

I’m just a person on my fucking knees begging the government to use its absolutely massive majority to do something extremely fucking popular: save our democracy.

This. It only confirms what the majority of us already know but the hard of thinking Reformers could do with watching it. Everyone knows at least one 'white, angry old man', show them.

Former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove has warned foreign states have their 'fingerprints' all over public service tech.. "For the sake of Britain’s national security this cannot continue...it risks overseas actors taking control of them (our critical infrastructure) at will.”

It’s all he has to do.

Jonn Elledge@jonnelledge.bsky.social

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Hard to overstate what an extreme position* is being advocated by the FT here, in historical terms 1/🧵 *she gets it wrong of course: settlement after 5 or 10 years is standard now (for those who qualify: it’s not “automatic”); Mahmood proposes to increase it to 20 years or never for many people

A really miserable piece of writing, wholly based in electoral impressionism. No thought for principles or the rights of migrants, and including spurious calculations about lifetime fiscal costs and benefits that simply ignore the real costs of what would happen if these workers were absent.

Librairies are indeed wonderful places but I did find one problem: it’s up to the individual person in charge of a library which newspapers they bring in for those oldies to read. In my local library the selection was Telegraph/Daily Mail/Times. Not a single paper of a different hue.
