"Once you’ve created discursive norms in which slurs, death threats, and constant, escalatory rhetorical attacks are condoned and encouraged, it’s impossible to maintain a cordon sanitaire around specific groups. It’s all just a big joke, regardless of topic. "

Great piece. It reminds me of when people are surprised by anti-black racism on the left & I have to explain that racism isn't ideological (AKA dependent on one's idea of the proper role & scope of govt), it's psychological (AKA dependent on one's worldview & schema).

I see your point, but I wouldn't want to imply racial animus is 'depoliticized', rather that its origins don't spring from one's opinions on govt's ideal role (left v right), but from hierarchical notions of who is worthy of dignity, rooted in one's taught/learned idea of the human condition.

“Racism’s function is to regulate the distribution of death”? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used that same logic when calculating my portion of the tip.

I don’t know that getting people to respect their enemies enough to actually use their names is going to happen, certainly not in this environment, and that’s the only way you rein in slurs, unless you have the power to punish. Also doesn’t help that there’s been an effort to blur the lines.

“leftists are so antisemitic simply because that’s how we’ve trained ourselves to talk about anyone we don’t like” - you agree this, too, is a leftist issue only? My post broadens the views to allow us to reconsider root causes! And if ur ‘trained’ to talk shit, well, THAT is YOUR ‘excuse’

“But when it comes to popular left-wing podcasters or Twitch streamers …” STOP RIGHT THERE!!! And you will BEGIN to see your disconnect and how brainwashed society has become. If u think leftists seek civil war #2 and aim to enslave/k!ll others, youve chosen the wrong side! Or do u not see this:

“leftists are so antisemitic” because that’s how we’ve trained ourselves to talk about anyone we don’t like” - u agree? If so, ur likely ‘trained’ (brainwashed) Travel, experience others, talk to survivors, then revisit this leftist-only view! Myself, root cause extends higher/wider -no excuses

It really isn't a matter of anti-semitism or even "slurs". It's a combination of a lack of accountability combined with the nonsense "guilt by association" trap that we keep insisting on.

A bunch of people favor Medicare for all. Some of those people are anti - semitic. Do the Antisemites' association with the group degrade the other individuals? The cause itself? I think there's a whole thing in the constitution about this sort of thing.

I mean, it's a decent piece but I find the prescription quite self-serving, i.e. "institutional guardrails", when institutional credibility was lost partly because orgs like the ADL merging anti-Zionism with antisemitism, media like BBC running embarrassing omissions, etc.

"People exist, and some are antisemites, and therefore the left is antisemitic." Translation: "The right is out here murdering people and ripping families apart daily, but take a look at these statistics we heavily warped to support our initial conclusion."

This is incorrect. You are conflating “antisemitism” with “anti-Netanyahu’s-Palestinian-genocidism”

Do you think there is any amount of genuine anti-semitism amongst the left? And if so, how much would it need to be to be considered a problem that should be addressed?

Any amount of antisemitism should be addressed, the question is with what priority? In my personal life if someone comes out with anti-Jewish comments, I’m an atheist, but I will clap back that person. But if we are trying to improve Democrats, goosing milquetoast Schumer to retire is more urgent

Did you read the article? I'm pretty sure the only time it mentions an elected official is Mamdani, and it's in a positive light because he has made combatting anti-semitism a priority. The article is about the behavior of leftists as a community, online and offline.

And it is really important to distinguish that criticizing the *policies* against Palestinians by the Netanyahu administration, should not be confused with antisemitism. The first criticizes actions and decisions, the second criticizes identity.
