Seven years ago today we took our Barney for his last walk in the park. Not a day has passed since that I haven’t thought of him. Some dogs just never ever leave. You were a good boy, Barney, and we miss you something terrible.

I understand. It’s been 5 years this month since I said goodbye to Grace. I still think of her every day. Some dogs are just your soulmates and somehow they’re always with you. If you’ve had one like that you’ve been blessed!

🥲🥲. It’s only been a year for me but the loss remains the same and always will. I’ve had dogs all my life but she was special. She chose me twice at 8 weeks old.

I fully understand. When my oldest was 17, he's 55 now, we lost his best friend, a German Shepard, who was 15. To this day, we can't bring up her up around him because he still tears up. Maybe Barney and Flower have met.

I had a Barney, but I called him Max and it took me five years before I could even think about getting another dog. I have a new pal now, Rocky ... but I still call out 'Max' by mistake from time to time. 😢

I understand your pain; it's so hard to make *that* decision and not keep second-guessing yourself about whether or not "now" should be the time. Thank you for the time that you did give him, and don't be afraid to contemplate the possibility of finding another wonderful pup to adopt...🐾🐶🐾

I don’t know if you saw my post from early June, commemorating five years since we lost Czerny. As you say, some dogs just never ever leave. It may have been seven years ago, Thom, but I’m awfully sorry for your loss. 🙏

No, they don’t, and that’s probably OK; it just means they touched us – and probably changed us – in some deep way that’s impossible to fully process. Friends used to assure me the sense of loss will pass, but I don’t think that’s always true. Thinking of you and Barney today. Be good to yourself. 😊

Thank you. From the moment I saw him, pressed against the shelter kennel in a holding area where we weren’t supposed to go, I knew he was the one. Called every day to make sure no one claimed him. Got there early on adoption day. He was our bright light. I’ll never really get over losing him.

Through the years we’ve lost many a valued pet, a part of the family . But it’s a requirement to get back in the game. Pets don’t live as long as us, someone else will fill the void, the opportunity is waiting for you note: if you have already acquired a new pup, my apologies. Also, my condolences

So true, Thom; I feel the same way about my animals. As a matter of regular practice I focus on each of my 7 dogs over my long life and my 3 horses. They brought me a perspective I never got from any human. My animals offered something joyous and magical to me. Will remeber them on my last day.

I can relate 💯 It will be 5 years in April for us, and every day I have so many flashbacks and can cry at any given moment. Chauncey was my best bud and I hope all my days are filled with his memory. Sorry for your heartbreak 💔

The world feels less after your furry companion departs. It is gutwrenching and hallow in the moment because a part of you has gone. Dogs give us joy, comfort, protection, and put their whole being in the moment. I am sorry for your loss, however long ago it was

They do leave a hole in our hearts and lives when they pass. It’s part of the cost of loving them and being loved by them. Glad you had Barney. So sorry for your loss 💔

So sorry about Barney. Seven years ago on June 22, my beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Buddy, was killed by a neighbor's loose dog while we were on a walk. I'll never stop missing my Buddy and I'll never stop being angry at irresponsible people who own dangerous dogs.

His brother Bud, who’s still with us (though getting on in years too). They were best friends. Barney adored him.

The hole they leave is immeasurable and often unbearable- but the good news is usually the tremendous companionship and unconditional love that precedes the grief.

We took our 17 year old collie for his last walk and laid a sneaky trail of chocolate covered treats, found with great delight! After 8 years we repopulated our home with two more collies; it took that long!

Isn't it amazing, that humans can bond with other species that way. I'm an old man now, but I still miss my dog-friend from childhood. Silly actually, but we can't help it.

I get it. My "forever" dog Frannie died 40 years ago (1986). I still think of her daily and often talk to her...out loud. I've had wonderful dogs since and two amazing dogs now. But as you say, Frannie just never ever left. And I'm good with that. Hugs to you, Thom.

I still miss my last dog Einstein, I felt there could never be another Einstein. And there can't. But now I know, there can never be another Daisy either. Dogs are wonderful :)

Barney walks in the park every day, I firmly believe that. Our Sabre (GSD/Lab) left us in 2002, age nrly 18. He was the dog you only get once in a Lifetime. He saved me at least twice when we were Homeless together. We watched thunderstorms together and he loved Guy Fawkes night too.

The last walk, when you know it is the last walk, is brutal. You never want it to end. Stop and smell everything. Say hello to everybody. Stay positive as you are wailing inside. Be together in the moment. Belated condolences.

That’s exactly what it was like. We lingered over every blade of grass, every bush and fallen leaf we encountered. He plodded slowly, bc time had eventually taken its toll. But I would have had time stand still forever if I could have.

Enjoy your memories. Enjoy this day. Celebrate a beautiful life you got to live next to him, taking care of him and loving him. I pray your heart heals peacefully and strong enough for you to adopt a beautiful and needing soul to make more happy memories with 🙏🫶🏼

Barney had a brother, Bud, who’s still with us and who we love very much and would move mountains for. Still, our love for him is different. Barney was sent to us for a reason at a particular time and burrowed into our hearts for the long haul.
