New York will require schools statewide to ban smartphone use during school hours, joining a national movement aimed at preventing compulsive social media use and distractions that interfere with school work, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced.

We live in a digital age. There are computers and screens all over classrooms now. Why can’t kids be taught to use their phones responsibly. Some kids prefer digital to do lists, why can’t they type in assignments to their phones at the end of class for example? Are adults’ phones banned at work?

Good! As young people enter the workforce, their incessant checking of phones is ridiculous. Lousy parents don’t want to actually parent. Just shove a phone I front of your bratty kid is not a solution.

Why should we let a convicted FELON terrorize our country and the whole world? Executive orders are NOT laws. He is imploding the US from within. We the People need to stop this nonsense and start rebuilding our societal institutions in the way we want them to function. No more whining, but Action.

Cell phones are too much of a distraction. If the parent needs to reach a student, call the school. For a "school shooter" scenario, and nutcase on the loose, sudden sounds is not helpful to a child. Besides, what exactly is the benefit. Maybe kids need a mandatory break. Learn how to wait.

Gen Z & younger would disagree seems to be a rule made by thinkers from a time when calculators, phones etc were still separable from school & daily life they should stop making old laws for a new generation also bizarre how this alacrity is missing for guns.

This is a terrible idea. Teachers can easily control this in their classrooms. I am a sub and see it controlled all the time. Just have students put their phone in phone caddies upon entering each class. Problem solved. Banning them takes away their use for emergencies.

But hand them Chromebooks to take to and from school with wifi on the bus. They are using them just like phones. It's a losing battle many adults think they can win. It's too late. Their brains are already wired for constant dopamine hits.

Good luck getting parents to get on board, they didn’t in Ontario. Who’s going to take the phones and safeguard them when the kids bring them? Ten phones is $10,000 +/-, as a teacher I’m not accepting that responsibility. “It worked fine until Mr. So-and-so took it from me…”

My son goes to a Montessori school, and students are not allowed to have phones, tablets, etc. on campus. My nephew's school allows the students to bring devices, but they are locked in a locker until dismissal. Curiously enough, these children are doing exceptionally well in their school work.

Damn, Americans are batshit crazy.. think it's guns, guns and more guns. No wonder education is at the worst and TikTok whores at its best. Ban phones and install panic buttons in each room with a camera - problem solved But no - more guns Bottom feeders Mericans' are

I want them in classrooms only for emergencies. You know in case of a school shooting. Here in America it's guns over kids. These poor kids call their parents to say goodbye I love you, just in case. Yep America sucks. 😢🤬

Until we solve the “children dying in their classrooms from being murdered by guns problems”, I think we should let kids have their cell phones, mostly so they can call their parents to say goodbye when they’re getting murdered by guns in their classrooms

what are you going to be able to do for them if they call you? seriously? i'm a parent also and this is a nightmare scenario, but how would being able to call me help? also, this exists in my state already and schools are allowed to let kids take out their phones at the admin's discretion anyway.

did you consider that kids at columbine didn't get to do that? idk how old you are, but we have had school shootings longer than we've had cell phones. and anyway the teachers wouldn't be going around writing kids up for cell phone infractions as everyone was dying, you boob.

With respect, that's crazy. Kids don't learn when they're distracted by their phones. It's educational neglect to allow phones in class. I'm glad NY is doing this. They'll always be distracted (windows, squirrels, sex) but phones are entirely different. -- concerned developmental ed psychologist

They already can’t have them in most classes. Does no one remember writing notes in class pre-phones? Students will always find ways not to pay attention if they want a distraction. They existed before phones and will exist without them. We should teach kids proper phone use not ban them.

I just don't think phones are the problem. I think the fact that education hasn't made school more interesting for kids to want to learn. Ppl are worried abt phones and teachers are still having to buy their own school supplies.

I understand your science & logic. In a safer country, absolutely. But our children aren’t safe. Too many have had to use their smuggled phones to call for help or tell their parents goodbye. Listen to the Uvalde 911 calls. Safety comes first.

With respect, whose safety was improved? Kids are allowed access to phones in emergencies. There is no backup plan for whatever they miss while using their phones during class. Phones also interfere w in-person relating. Social development is stunted. That's a lot to give up "just in case."

i live in a state that already has this and i have to say it's been amazing. my kid (admittedly, an N of 1 proves nothing, but it's all i've got) started getting better grades and actually, like, telling us about things that happened at school -- social and academic -- immediately. i'm for it.

1. As a recently retired teacher, I can tell you it’s hard enough keeping a student’s attention let alone managing the drama of adolescence w/o the distraction of cell phones. Then there’s the management of student laptops. Unbelievable the # of times kids were playing games instead of classwork.🙄☹️

2. IMO,too many children are addicted to video games- especially boys. I’d love to see a research study that investigates the role video gaming plays in boys lower college enrollment &subsequent lack of success. China has restricted their students access to gaming. I wish that we could do the same.

This is exactly my problem with banning cell phones during school hours. What about family emergencies (we all know that school offices are understaffed and can’t run messages for parents)? If my child cannot access me in the event of an active shooter, my child is not going to a state school.

One of the safe signs that this world is fucked? In the 1980's, the case was clear: the schools made the rules, like banning Walkmen. And if you got caught that thingy was confiscated to be given back when the school day was over. No discussions. And no lawsuits. Period. Press "Fast Forward"...

I am one that believes that cellphones and personal computers are the cause of a lot of the problems in our society. We were required to read and understand what we read. We were not allowed calculators in school. beepers were bad in school. Kids must learn to use their minds! Need to think more.

Kids were given phones 20 yrs ago so they could call their parents and say goodbye during a school shooting or call 911. What is a bigger distraction Instagram or a fearing getting shot at any moment? End gun violence now. Adults continue to fail children on all fronts.

This is one reason why Canada is so against joining the US. When we decided to limit cell phones in the school I work in it never once crossed my mind that they might need them in case of a shooting.

I think a lot of people are getting the wrong idea here. It doesn't seem like they're banning phones outright, just restricting usage during class. Of course you can use it in an emergency, but during a lesson, no way

No. I’m in NY. They are banning them outright, even between classes, lunch, etc. They already weren’t allowed during class by most schools. I’m pretty mad about it b/c there was no time for public input and was not a voting issue.

Good luck. My last 5 years teaching was in a residential treatment center. No cell phones! Also no belts or shoelaces. Had to count pencils and erasers to prevent self harm. Also no parents!

Ya'll I don't blame the desire to reduce smartphone use, but the US. refusal to secure kids safety (guns) is why parents text at 11 a.m. My Mom didn't trust my school after Columbine in the late 90s/ early 00s. If you expect cell free classrooms without structure change, ya'll crazy.

I grew up in a generation that could only envision a cell phone by watching the Jetsons. I also never lived in fear of a school shooting. I learned the times table, how to spell on my own as well as writing cursive. I also learned to be independent, there was no one at my beck and call. I'm fine.

I remember in middle school we couldn’t use them in the hallway or even have them showing except for lunchtime. If a teacher saw it it’d be taken away and you’d be charged $15 to get it back

Honestly good. I graduated high school in 2019 so I'm not all that old yet, and I can point to high school phone use as the beginning of the destruction of my attention span. I wish teachers had been harsher on it, even though I didn't feel that way then

There are many instances where phones are desperately needed. School shootings being one example. Attempted snatchings. Medical emergencies. How about we take your phone away from you. Let’s see how you cope. I get they can be a problem in the classroom but I see issues.

Good point. Is there another way that can guarantee they are not used in class except for emergencies? When I was in school there were 50 in a class, but now with fewer students, perhaps arrange desks in a circle if room or otherwise provide an incentive for them not to use them.

Actually I agree with this there are studies done about what is happening to the young brains from being on social media which becomes an addiction for them it does change the brain it is an addiction to many so yes I agree get the kids off the phone save their brains it is the same as drug addicti

That woman gives me whiplash. First, she’s willing to name Penn Station after Trump if he agrees to fund it (horrible idea), then she bans cell phones in the classroom (good idea). But her greatest failing so far is refusing to fire Mayor Adams. Which she could.

I would share but most people can't read your articles. We are up to our eyeballs in paywalls. If you are on the side of truth, you can deduct the expense so we can read here. Just a thought.

What about children who need to use a smartphone for medical reasons, like an insulin pump or continuous glucose monitor? Singling these kids out will likely cause issues with their peers or their health.

Such as allowing them to use their phones to manage their condition. Their peers won't realize that it's for medical reasons, like bolusing for a meal, checking blood sugar, or silencing an alarm for a high/low. By not allowing phone use the kids won't be able to manage their condition.

thanks for helping me understand. i guess your objection seems kinda ableist? plenty of kids have disabilities that can't be hidden. maybe kids w diabetes will get to better understand their peers in wheelchairs, with glasses, who take their tests/quizzes in a different room [like my kids], etc. 🤷‍♀️

Respectfully, your own trauma should not get in the way of any children's education including your own. I understand the fear which is justified, but phones are demonstrably harming students long term education.

Ban phone 'use'. Not ban 'phones'. Makes sense to me. How the hell could you teach with 30 kids texting back and forth? How about tests? Don't know the answer? Just text a friend.

What is so sad here is the only reason I see in this thread is don't take them away because of school shootings. The only schools in the Western world that this is what people put. That is beyond sad that is a reality. Cell phones in kids are affecting social and emotional growth in many people.

Don’t most cell phone providers allow parents to limit their children’s phone use? How hard is it to shut off the internet during school hours and only allow the phone to call the parents or 911?

Phones should be banned. Just like pagers. Nobody needs to take the phones if they aren’t being used though. And if it’s an emergency, then phone use will just sort itself out.

Has achievement improved in schools that have tried it? Some private schools and colleges require students to have laptops. If the class isn't engaging, the students mind will wander. Given the number of school shootings, some parents want to be able to contact their children at any time.

💯...but probably because some of these kids can't go more than a few minutes without checking their phone. we had young people leave rehab early because of the phone rules

I teach, and while we have not banned them from the building or anything, this year phones are kept on a holder on a wall, away from students, and the difference has been amazing. The difference in attention, the length of bathroom trips, the number of kids listening to an earbud: it’s all better
