Breaking News: Scientists have used A.I. to create new viruses for the first time, raising hopes for medical advances while also raising the possibility that the technology could someday be used to invent dangerous pathogens.

nyti.msThis A.I. Just Created Viruses Not Found in NatureScientists trained artificial intelligence on libraries of DNA and then asked the model to create recipes for viral genomes. Sixteen of them were viable, yielding new viruses.

Scientists use "AI" all the time, but i think that term is way too broad. It's not like they asked grok to design a genome. This is potentially a huge breakthrough in medicine that could save and improve the lives of every living person. Technology isn't good or bad it's how we use it.

I mean, that is literally what reporting like this is supposed to make you think. They have almost effectively eliminated the concept or understanding of machine learning. All so that people like musk and Sam Altman can rack billions while destroying the world around you.

It's not a chatbot. It's a machine learning model created by scientists specifically for this purpose. Being a virus does not automatically make it a pathogen.

Not someday. Any day now. Look at the world, at who has power and wants more. Are they altruistic? No! The planned uses for AI are not all, or even mostly, good. In fact, the good uses are being used to sell us on the technology until it's too late to stop it. We need firm controls NOW.

Fauci stands accused of ‘gain of function’ research, and in effect causing the Covid pandemic, and they want to make entirely new viruses? Using AI, which lately has begun wandering free and may decide to infect us rather than mere computer systems?

Creating new viruses can cure many diseases, including the viruses we have and acting as vaccines for them. Not just other viruses though. They could be designed to alter your DNA to remove a genetic disease or to attack a bacteria or difficult to treat protozoa disease like malaria.

No offense, but i don't think you understand how machine learning algorithms work. There are enough real problems with large ai models and ai companies without invoking skynet. AI models used by scientists are usually smaller and more specialized so they don't have the same problems as llms.

This is the problem with the pro-AI argument. The possible good things are touted while the equally possible but far more serious downsides (up to and including potential human extinction) are ignored or downplayed. AI is only as good as the people using it. And that brings me no comfort.

"This is the way the world ends, This is the way the world ends, This is the way the world ends, Not with a bang, but with a digital sneeze."

Oh, how damn adorable. AI is making viruses, not knowing what will happen while we have politicians scapegoating a scientist who has saved countless lives. How do I get off this merry-go-round from hell?
