It’s cool, and not incredibly demoralizing, that the last ~25 years (? more?) have been an increasingly flagrant demonstration that The Rules, as we were brought up to understand them, just do not apply to a lot of people

The public doesn't understand how these people operate. That's why every book club in the U.S. shd read @mkonnikova.bsky.social 's The Confidence Game, a history of con artists. Also Babiak's Snakes in Suits. And Hoffer's classic The True Believer And @brianklaas.bsky.social 's book

It’s been hugely sick(🤘) to find out that the Checks and Balances in our government are nothing more than gentlemen’s agreements that hinge on people being decent and acting in good faith, and buddy, we’re all out of decent, good-faith people.

All forms of government fall into one of two categories. At their core, they are all either based on trust or the threat/use of physical force and violence. When a gov’t is not the latter, then it is by default the former. If people give power in a trust-based system to criminals this is the result.

Per Wilhoit's law, "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."
