This seems at least a little decent, assuming we get past the first offense of attacking anyone in international waters at all. Truly evil move would be to kill them and then there's no story that reaches our eyes at all. I wonder what the internal conversation went like

Holy shit. This is almost too hard to believe. Blow up their boat under highly questionable if not non-existent authorities, then release them? This story needs to have legs. Something is way out of whack here.

When 77 million Americans decide they want to vote for a moronic authoritarian who flouts the rule of law and common sense, this is the kind of stuff that you get.

Of course they won’t prosecute them or hold them in military detention where they would have access to lawyers and would reveal that the Trump Admin is committing murder for political gain.

This is bizarre. We know these guys were not drug smugglers; otherwise, they would be paraded before the media as proof this operation is justified. The fact that Trump is not framing them or disappearing them is pretty incredible. The media needs to find and interview them immediately.

Didn’t know what to do with them. Enemy combatants would highlight the illegal war. Criminal defendants would highlight their murders of civilian suspects. No good option for war criminals.

Not likely in a submarine, unlike the first murder of 11. But Trump doesn’t want anyone here have access even if the boat was full of cocaine.

"Semi-submersible vessels are used for a variety of offshore operations, including heavy-lift transport, oil & gas drilling & production, & marine survey work." Colombia has offshore oil rigs. Maybe they were just doing their jobs. Someone needs to interview them when they get back to Colombia

I think we are talking about quite different things. My assumption was that was not the kind of working ship that is partly submerged to do things like float another piece of equipment, but crude vessels that travel mostly submerged to elude detection. Naturally, the gov't account is not reliable.

Very possible the Navy determined the survivors were fishermen being forced to pilot the boat by smugglers. The smugglers frequently force poor fishermen with experience on the sea to crew their smuggling craft. That's one of the many reasons extrajudicial murder of everyone on board is abhorrent.

Could just be that without the boat and its contents, they have nothing other than "these guys were on the high seas looking sneaky" and even this administration can't find a lawyer willing to make a Federal case out of it.

“Just don’t go to the news and tell them the truth about what happened, what you were doing, or why you were there, and you can go home. Here’s some fish for your trouble. Don’t say nothin’, won’t be nothin’. Now, scram!”

I bet Hegseth forced an admiral to resign over ordering a rescue. Can you imagine US military being ordered to murder survivors in the water? I can.
