We talk about Bluesky getting users, but Bluesky is part of an open social internet called "The Atmosphere" where other people can make their own apps, including their own versions of Bluesky. Bluesky isn't growing; the Atmosphere is! You're not "our" users; you're a part of a shared place.

Yes. The BlueSky app is simply on top of a platform. Anybody can make a different app. I'm not a techie, but it's designed so I could move to another service but keep my UID & everything associated with it. Mastodon, for ex, is tied to servers. Changing is hard. BlueSky's designed so it's easy.

AT/Bsky is a new way not just of social media, but also decentralization. A user & their identity isn't tied to any server or app. It's like a giant swimming pool w/ everyone in it & we can paddle over to different apps or create communities as we want. +

If AT/Bsky is successful, our followers will go with us to whatever app or community we try, never needing to rebuild our social connections. All our posts, images, videos, etc. stay with us on our own "PDS".

It’s been done before, see matrix and more importantly mastodon/activitypub. I’ve heard that the protocol behind bluesky (ATProto) is better, but take my word with a grain of salt and do your own research

The idea behind ATProto was originally to create an open protocol where Twitter would have been just one component (the bird in the sky) but since they became totally independent of Twitter, they built their own Twitter-like app with it, Bluesky (which was only meant to be a test originally).

So, you could build other Twitter-like apps on atproto but also something like Instagram or TikTok or whatever but that you could use with a single portable identity and data centralized where you want (and also portable). Actually, there are already some like one for blogging: whtwnd.com

whtwnd.comWhiteWind atproto blogWhiteWind is an atproto blog service that anyone with a Bluesky account can use for free, without providing any personal information. You can write blogs in Markdown syntax and publish them on the int...

I don't know about anyone else, but my first instinct on implementing for a different language (#RakuLang in my case,) would be to leap in and make a thing to parse the definitions and create (stub,) implementations for all the classes.

As of right now I don't believe so. There are ways to bridge it though (although not sure how well it works as of right now). There might be proper integration between bsky and mastodon protocols someday, but not main foucs as of right now from what I know.

It's probably already bigger than ActivityPub after only a little more than half a year since public opening. It's different. Each have their strong points. In ActivityPub, everything is tied to the instance (identity, data storage, moderation, search, …) which is interesting to create communities.

With atproto, it's more modular. You can change the server which store your data and keep your identity and all your network. You can use feeds from multiple sources. You can use different moderation services of your choice. And you can search the entire network.

do you guys have plans for verified accounts? not for engagement farming or monopolizing, but so that we know that we're actually seeing who we think we are

Here, your domain can be used as your user identification. You will see a lot o profiles here with "something.bsky.social," or in case you have your own domain, it can be "something.com.br". So is already a type of verification.

It just means if Bluesky gets bought or turns evil, someone else can make a new app and you can bring all of your follows and posts and stuff with you automatically. Technically it also means if someone created another Bluesky right now, it could talk to this app like they were the same thing.

genuinely the only thing Bluesky needs is wider adoption and use. once that happens twitter will be absolutely obsolete (not that I can even use it anymore anyways)

Hi, divo! Is there any way we can have something that is like the "trending topics" we had on the forbidden website ruled by the evil gremlin? Like, is there an email where we could send our suggestions to whoever decides that? Bluesky is really great, but that is missing Thanks!!!

Awesome to see someone finally putting together all the cool things from mastodon in a concise and usable application for the non tech people. Great work you guys been doing!

Put everything you have on Greysky and Okidoki here on Bluesky. That way, people who are still thinking about using this app regularly will have no "reasons" to give up or find it difficult. Bluesky is already aesthetically good and will improve even more.

Not sure that will stop people expecting that the team has responsibility for running this place. Idk where this 'atmosphere' idea/branding came from it's not something I've heard of before at all.

Yep! Because your account could be run by somebody else, or hosted on your own server, we have to use domain names to find you. It's a big part of the "Atmosphere" idea.
