I think an interesting thought experiment would be to ask yourself whether there is some technology that Elon musk could develop that would make your site irrelevant, or whether poor moderation policy will always be a sufficient reason to leave a social network

the negativity will stop when you stop covering for fascist cunts and ban them like a normal person would. shocker, people don't like fascists, and when you dodge answering "why don't you ban them," you get criticised for not banning fascists.

but I have so many positive interactions and so few negative interactions online, even here 0: I have plenty of criticisms of this platform and the politics of how it is run, but the only technical complaints I have are about how complicated and expensive it is to run and maintain a full stack

Current design leads this to occur? Don't you have core values surrounding this work and is there no one responsible for maintaining that atmosphere? This platform stuff only works if everyone's working together. Governance is like that. You have to govern. This is what you chose to become.

Then fix your shit. No, there's not a "Fix Your Shit" button that makes this happen immediately. But I'm 1000% sure that the CTO posting witty zingers in the midst a product-related comms crisis is the opposite of whatever's involved in fixing your shit.

I subscribed to a few hefty blocklists of known right-wing agitators back when I first made an account and honestly with maybe one exception it's been smooth sailing on a person-to-person level since. But that was a community-driven moderation effort. A systemic effort would be hugely beneficial.

not the app, the moderation. bsky cannot decide if it actually believes in composable moderation or not - it says it can't ban racists because users have the power and burden to manage their own experience, but then it actions user lists that point out racists for being 'rude'

like, why hasn't juni had any response at all regarding why the head of T&S used moderation like his personal goon squad? singal is a tiny, almost irrelevant symptom of bsky itself refusing to engage with moderation as a responsibility while continuing to wield it foolishly and selfishly

It’s not great to see the decision makers of this app look at their glaring social and community issues as tech problems that just need better product design Y’all are smarter than this

I think the app is the best thing that happened to social networking since I don't know when. I know that it's a happy app for me. You don't deserve the blame/hate in the comments. Am I out of touch believing that it's unfair to blame the Wright brothers for 9/11 or Dresden bombing?

Yeah I mean, when you let a transphobe who has done more to box in and make life difficult for trans people, on your app, who's early traffic was driven by trans people, that guy is going to make the space negative

I used to have such high hopes for the future of this app, it's so disappointing to see the approach that the moderation is taking. shame

do you imagine "waffles" was a positive interaction? you and the team have time and again stepped in obvious piles of shit and then acted surprised when you get shit on your shoes. you can't blame people for having predictable and reasonable reactions to your inept handling of these EASY situations

You’re the one watching bigots tear at vulnerable populations & waving meme flags at us the whole time. Like if I shrug & say oh well every time someone says ‘golly trans people go to jail immediately die!’ theyre seeing what they can get away with. And it feels like your team. Doesn’t care At all.
