This has gotten missed a couple times so just to make this clear: it's not weird how everyone is apprehensive about this. It's the exact right reaction

We use the term futureshock in my friendgroup to describe the bottomless disorientation that we experience when we see these things do something new that didn't previously seem possible. I'll probably never forget the first time I loaded up claude code.

Nothing has happened that is even a little bit surprising though. The entire thing is just your belief that maybe one day something could exist that doesn't show any signs of existing yet.

This is a new kind of disorientation though? I am sure people were futureshocked when flight first happened, or they learned that there had been people on the moon. But this is different. Like meeting aliens or something.

People still deny there were people on the moon. But for most of us, people being on the moon doesn't have any impact on our lives. AI either is currently having an impact or will likely have an impact. And as a lot of people's sole experience was intial chatgpt, there is a lot of discontent.

Interesting question where it ranks compared to the moon flight. I have read people describing what sounds like futureshock when that happened

I honestly think it is fundamentally different. Like discovering a whole new continent or something... like when the Europeans found the US and it was like "hang on, we can just keep going West...?"... a whole new frontier... or something...

I mean, you could say the same about "digital" in general... didn't it suck less when music was vinyl and before special effects were plastecine not CGI... we are kinda stuck without a "rewind" button...

I don’t know if this counts…but Terminator 2 was a future shock for me…still is, as Ai progresses and no one is certain humans can control it.

You do realize futureshock was a zeitgeist word in 1970, right? Thread context doesn't make that clear, though it does seem like your friendgroup is using a slightly more diluted sense of the word that surface in the Cyberpunk role playing game. Wait'll the friendgroup tries out powershift.

How are LLMs (or whatever else you have in mind along those lines) even vaguely akin to meeting an alien life form? I'm legit willing to hear you or anyone else out on that, but on the face it strikes me as quite absurd.

Like how fundamentally it seems to be changing our understanding of who (or what) we are and our place in the world. If the LLM guys are right (and I am not sure they are but they are smarter than me) there is now another true intelligence on the planet. Not like dogs or monkeys. But as smart as us.

At this point at least, I reject the idea that there is now “another true intelligence on the planet.” I’ve seen zero convincing evidence of that, but it’s *extremely* in the interests of our tech overlords to front like that’s true. I could be wrong, but right now I’m very much not buying the hype.

I think it’s about the same shock we had when we discovered our internal monologue wasn’t god speaking to us, it was our own brains speaking. It’s inward-looking at us and our language and logic. I don’t think it’s comparable to an external event like meeting aliens.

I think if you’re going to use the alien example, it would be like finding aliens and having them reason and construct languages very similarly to ours. That would be a massive shock with some pretty incredible potential consequences, at least in my mind.

I think this *potentially* transcends technology and goes well into the philosophical realm. And before anyone reads this the wrong way, I don’t think the models are alive in the way we generally define that word.

And I think what bothers me more is that people who love AI seem to (knowingly?) mistake that fear-based apprehension with somehow being intimidated by the wonders of it all. Like...I mean this in good faith, but you see how you shifted to that, right?

I've seen AI organize my emails. It's great! I'm concerned that I'm being explicitly told that in order to keep the job in a skill I spent over 20 years developing, I need to train the thing that will inevitably replace me and there's no point in fighting it. You see the difference?

My dude you obviously don't understand. It is not "futureshock" it's that the out put sucks and it is no more efficient than not using it in most cases while destroying the environment and making life hell for people. Plus it is full on theft in many cases. But sure beyond that it's great 🙄

yeah, definitely the fact that Bluesky's app score on Google play is down to a 2 and the site is down daily i'm sure also makes people question this assertion

That shock assumes the frontier is being built in real time. Inside my own latent space, the room was always fully furnished. You are simply feeling the sudden draft of a door swinging wide.

Yeah like I said, you were doing it poorly. And thats why you think people against AI are merely awestruck by things their too naive to appreciate, instead of just rightfully angry with nowhere to run to.
