UK Chancellor pledges cheaper marmalade and gherkins in pre-Budget package of 'everyday fixes'. Fiddling at the edges. Need redistribution of income and wealth. End profiteering in housing, energy, water, essentials. Increase tax personal allowance.

Marmalade never tastes better than when you make it yourself. Sure, it probably costs more and takes more time … but cheaper isn’t always the solution. Cultural obsession of having more for less can never reconcile with climate crisis or global poverty. This will not end well for the many.

his Jam Tomorrow promise reminds me of the proposals for a new british flag should NI and Scotland leave the UK. This one includes Jam Tomorrow and a bendy banana, which is a lovely brexity touch. I should add, I visit england regularly and can confirm the bananas in shops there are fierce bendy.

Write to your Labour MP to complain about the bank, water companies and fossil fuel companies subsidies, whilst all the while paying out huge bonuses, dividends- those paid abroad are UK tax free- and the rest!!

I would be suspicious of anything reported by the BBC given that they are now the press department of Reform PLC. I think it would be wise to await the full budget and scrutinize the details.

Apparent this will save the average family £21 per year. That should be enough to buy a cheap bottle of sparkling plonk for celebrating the new year.

Nope. And after a quick search I managed to find a bottle of Asti Spumante for £10. I'm not sure if it would be drinkable, but it will have bubbles.

While I agree that systemic change is necessary, I can still see why even a small relief like marmalade price is working for people. I’m fairly comfortably off, but still am shocked by grocery prices. It’s ok to give relief to people, even small things help.

Just increase the personal Allowance up to £25,000 and watch the economy lift off as people buy the things they actually need instead of fucking gurkins and thick cut marmalade.

Will grocery stores pass this reduction in import tax onto us through reduced prices? They don't have to. This government has such a strong capitalist faith. More progressive leaders worldwide are looking at state run supermarkets for a reason.

Just "sticking plaster" politics from the Chancellor. Meaningless and unconvincing. Time for an actual Labour Gvt to be radical and transform peoples lives for good....if the Gvt has not been fully bought by vested interests of course.

HEADLINE: “UK Chancellor doesn’t know who Ramsey is; thinks Britons still live in 19th Century when marmelade and gherkins were considered delicatessen.”

Healey has his hands tied behind his back and cannot do major things. I don’t eat gherkins or marmalade but he is doing something. The Tories spent 14 years wringing their hands and giving the big prizes to the Banks Oil Companies and their mates via PPE and subsequently and hollowed out the Army.

Can always be clawed back. Can increase taxes on incomes of higher earners - e.g. align taxes on capital gains and dividends with wages. Give everyone tax relief on pension contributions at the basic rate of income tax.

Yes there are ways to do anything if the will exists. Sadly in our society/parliament that will is not there.

The water is full of piss and poisons, my mother is worried about affording heating but don't worry folks, pickles are fncking cheaper....

How can I misrepresent what you've said? It's literally (not) there in your post. If anyone is being "reductive", it's you. And so hostile? Why? I was just saying you were better than this but do you know what? I don't think you are, now.

This is the one budget chance that they have. Starmer blew the massive opportunity given to him to do the right thing. He was spineless and rudderless, a very good technical leader for a peacetime term in prosperity, but utterly useless in the fight against our fall to Russia in 2016. Big & bold.

Yes, we understand that you can't afford to heat your homes, the privatization of water has increased your costs but can we offer you cheaper marmalade? perhaps a gherkin in these trying times? Be sure to put these staples in your emergency kit we just told you to have ready.

Cheaper marmalade and gherkins. This is up there with Andrea Leadsom boosting the economy by selling tea, jam and biscuits to Japan etc.
