A child in an Idaho faith-healing family died of a treatable condition. Then another died — and another, and another. Idaho’s child abuse laws contain such broad religious exemptions that authorities didn’t intervene — before or after the deaths.

Child abuse/neglect should not be a religious right. Tired of people getting away with so much just because they believe in some imaginary sky daddy.

This is more proof authorities don't care one bit about saving the lives of babies. They only care about preventing women from making their own healthcare decisions. Oppressing women all the way up to the supreme court.

Sounds like the Authorities didn't want to do anything. That's the pro-life religious freaks at their best.

Do these educationally-challenged Jesus freaks ever consider that maybe God gave us doctors and medicine as a show of his love for us??!? And by letting their children die, they're rejecting that love, instead of exhibiting any sort of faith??!? Idaho is complicit.

f the Joyces had had abortions, they would be in prison. But not for killing actual, living children. If such an easily preventable death of an innocent child occurs again, I hope a prosecutor is willing to press charges, all the way up to the ID Supreme Court. This law must be invalidated.

I'm just curious... What share of Idahoans who favor allowing this oppose gender affirming care for children. And what share of Idahoans who support gender affirming care for children oppose this?

So, let me get this straight. Abortions are considered murder but letting children die of preventable diseases because of "God's will" is ok. People like to trash Texas for their backwards and regressive laws but Idaho doesn't get talked about enough over this shit

Pro-Life has always been a political slogan. The movement (bowel movement AFAIC) decided "Anti-Abortion" slogan is a turn-off for the masses. Also has Pro-Life ever advocated neo-natal care? How about food & living assistance for new mothers? R's stop caring the second the second the baby is born.

When I lived there for a short time, there were radio ads explaining what a pediatrician is and why they are important. A pediatrician opened a practice in a neighboring town and had to close after 6 months due to a lack of patients.

And are we surprised America elected Donald Trump President? Republicans' "investment" in keeping Americans uneducated has "paid off". Well, it DID pay off. For THEM. While it's KILLING their voters. Which they know & are coming back for more & more. VOTE BLUE 🇺🇸. Your life depends on it.

i don't get it. if there's this "obscure law" they link to that lets a doctor advise a judge to order treatment if it "greatly endangers" their life, then four DEAD kids seems like four increasingly dumbfounding missed opportunities for invoking it? nobody said "let's get a doctor" after dead kid 2?

Those laws have exemptions, in several states, for faith healing (most of them date back to the Nixon administration IIRC). Also, the USA is the only country that hasn't ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

usa is woefully unrepresented in the morality of the rest of the world They continue to vote with russia, and any other attempt to take responsibility or align with the world courts or ethics Disgust

Some of the most fervent advocates against these faith healing exemptions have been parents who let their own kids die via faith healing, who realized what they'd done & vowed to protect other kids from the same fate. They fight to close these loopholes that let them hurt their kids.

But we are not majority religious nutters in the UK. It would never pass. Only 12% of the country go to a church service regularly. Our right wing crazies are on a hiding to nothing when they try the 'US Christian Right' policies.

Get an abortion and you get charged with murder. Murder your kid with negligence while wearing a crucifix? Totally chill bruh 🤙 The gloves need to come off with religious people. ALL of them. Far too long has the human species been dragging the dead weight of the superstitious. Enough is enough.

My "biz" is caring about abuse victims and protecting them from harm. Eugenicist freaks glorifying abusers murdering their victims because of "the gene pool" are on the side of abusers, and you can go fuck yourself for that.

Refusing to care for your children (to the point where they die from the neglect) must be that "post birth abortion" that the right right-wingers are always yapping about. And they do it to their own.

15 CHILDREN died in a 10 year period among this cult. From the report here, it looks like it was all from wholly preventable and/or treatable illnesses. Holy shit. That isn't religious freedom or "having faith", this is deliberate and willful neglect. "God doesn't want us to" THEN YOUR GOD IS EVIL.

If your religion demands that let you let your toddlers die horrible, agonizing deaths from a condition we figured out how to treat OVER A CENTURY AGO then your religion is evil, it is wrong, and you should be moved to tear it down with your bare bleeding fingers.

I genuinely don't think parents like these actually care about their kids in any real human way. They worship preventable suffering and have no real intention of caring for their families.

*sighs* Which is why my entire household in the state (ages 47-86) all had to have the pcp check if our vaccines are all working. (Some can fade over time, and 40 years is long enough to have to check. And then there are the ones with boosters like whooping cough and tetanus.)

V confirms this claim checks out. Investigative reports from ProPublica and local news confirm Idaho's broad religious exemptions for faith-healing sects prevent child abuse investigations and… Real-time fact-checks on your feed: https://veratify.ai Errors or comments: info@veratify.ai

At what point is “faith” considered insane brainwashing? You would think after losing a single child, you’d reconsider whether using prayer alone was an effective way to treat a sick child, but four of them? That’s not faith; it’s some form of mental deficiency.

Murdering children through neglect is perfectly legal in the US, just as long as you believe REALLY HARD that you should be allowed to. This idea is called "parents rights"
