A driver hit me with their car today while making a right-turn-on-red. I’m uninjured, and also more angry than usual at how we let car drivers kill us with only the occasional, incremental, reactionary change to the street.

Thank you, Marc! I’m sad I spent my day shaken up about this instead of celebrating bike joy at Kidical Mass. We’re so lucky for people like you who are creating a world where riding a bike is safe, freeing, and fun.

The fact that a red light doesn't always mean stop is crazy to me. Turning on red being legal in some places, and flashing red meaning "proceed with caution" are insane.

I'm glad the Lord God made me so competent at predicting the maneuvers of automobile drivers on the roadway. it's almost like I have a another sense other than the 5 normal senses, a kind of sixth sense.

Drivers will fight to the death to protect their sense of convenience over safety. At a recent public meeting to discuss a DOT safety study of a major blvd, a guy actually stood up to complain that twice cyclists have *hit his car* while he was making a right on red. When DOT said that they were ...

proposing to eliminate both RoR and permissive left turns (i.e., turn on green arrow only), he was upset and declared "I shouldn't have said anything. Now you're going to take away my right to turn on red", as if it was a god-given right. He couldn't care less that it was based on all the crashes...

between cars but also all the cyclists and pedestrians, including school kids, being hit. The stats meant nothing to him. 40k deaths per year in the USA caused by motor vehicle drivers, but getting to the grocery 30 seconds sooner is more important than addressing this mass death and injury crisis.

I've had a very frustrating number of close calls with drivers turning right on red on my block. Yes especially frustrating since there is no right on red at that intersection. 🫩

People seem to struggle with the idea that just because you can turn right on red, doesn’t mean you should- and you still have to stop first. I’m sick of seeing people blow through without stopping and looking

It's because people don't obey the law regarding coming to a full stop and checking the right of way before turning. Sit a cop 100' down from an intersection and stop and ticket everyone that ignores that law. Of course, it might help if cops obeyed that law.

We have that here too. Works well. But right-on-red? There are times it might be safe, but it mostly isn’t, normalizes bad driving, and also does not improve traffic flow and reduce idling as was the original goal. Total failure.

Ugh I’m sorry, that’s horrible. If you’re willing to DM me the location I can try checking it out to see if there are any design mitigation opportunities. I have a “no right on red” requirement concept I’m trying to test in the East Bay.
