Really enjoyed starting my day with this post. The drop in the grid’s carbon intensity is incredible. “two decades ago the average carbon emissions per kWh were around 500 g CO2 / kWh. In 2025 it was 121 g CO2 / kWh.”

NEW BRIGHT SPOTS: Even on 100% gas power, heat pumps cut emissions by ~48% and EVs by about half. The authors of an “electrification doesn’t cut emissions” paper made a series of compounding mistakes and used misleading assumptions. Here's why. janrosenow.substack.com/p/heat-pumps...

The craziest thing to happen to American politics in my lifetime was the Midwest looking at the South, historically the most poor and backwards part of the country that was the punchline to every joke, and deciding they wanted to be just like that.

These are clearly felony murders. Trump and Pete Hegseth went out and intentionally murdered innocent fishermen, with help from high ranking US military officers.

In Trump's other big war—the one against drug dealers and traffickers in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific—evidence produced at trial increasingly shows that all those big-time drug dealers are in fact just fishermen. And Trump has murdered nearly 300 of them. www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2...

This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding bikes, yet 66% of people did so while driving. And perhaps even more importantly, if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid.com

But most of the people who voted for this when they voted for Prop 13 have died of old age, and the levees didn't break while they were still alive, and in the meantime they had a lot of extra money to spend on stuff, so the system worked.

I bet most people would be surprised by these charts showing the Graying of Silicon Valley. I think people would especially be shocked by the San Francisco chart of Children vs Seniors, given media portrayal and pop culture.

The generation that got to buy cheap houses thanks to a postwar construction boom, then blocked new housing construction to juice their asset values is now whining that they have to pay taxes on their unearned wealth. Just breathtaking selfishness.

Karen Bass glonzo-posting about how Nithya Raman supports data centers is hilarious to me because Los Angeles is home to a ton of genuinely terrible industrial pollution sources, many of them near residential areas.

I've never struggled to believe reports of bad behavior by cops because even in my very limited interactions with them in my life, they've often been remarkably unprofessional, rude, and threatening. Just suggested one shouldn't block the only accessible sidewalk and he called me a p*ssy and more.

As usual, zero consideration for where bikes are supposed to go when you close a bike lane. Of course 2 car lanes are kept open.

California's recent political shift toward thinking it's bad for violent drivers to kill and maim people is going to have to spend ~ a decade in conflict with the massive state/local governments and institutions whose purpose is to help violent drivers kill and maim people. It's gonna be wild.

Mayor Bass's statements on the pedestrian death has huge mayor in hot dog costume vibes. You want to find who is accountable? Maybe start with the mayor who has blocked safe street projects throughout the city.

When Third Way says that Dems should hold off their anti-trans strategies, you know things are changing. The organization tends to be more centrist, and they are noticing the same thing the far-right is... the Republican anti-trans campaign cycle is NOT working this year.

For those that might have missed 4th grade math class, if you keep passing the same cyclist then you are going the same average speed as them and you gain nothing from making a dangerous pass.

I am not going to lie. I absolutely LOVE passing drivers multiple times, especially if they punish pass me like I am slowing their important journey. Driving aggressively in most urban and suburban zones has zero upside and they fully deserve to be reminded of that.

Photo from Reddit of today’s Critical Mass. There are hundreds of cyclists in this photo and only about 40 people in cars. Yet both groups are taking up roughly the same amount of road space.

I told my PT my left elbow hurt. She said, "that's the side the lady hit you with her car, right? Think that may have something to do with it?" 🤦 Old ladies that shouldn't be driving are going to kill us all, and it's so normalized we'll just be sadly nodding while they run us over.

a little old lady walked into my office and said "my car key is stuck in the ignition... could you help me call AAA" and I said "why don't you let me take a look at it?" it turned out her car was in reverse with the parking brake on so it wouldn't let her take the key out :)

Wrong. This is an ag policy problem. Residential water use is a pittance compared to the water resource demands of the cattle industry.

Folks are welcome to try and prove it otherwise, but "free migration within the country" and "barely managed water policy, especially in the light of climate change" are inherently in a kind of conflict.
