China's EV industry is going to conquer the world. After turning ICEs into niche products in China, Chinese EV manufacturers are going to drive Detroit, Japan & Germany out of Africa, Latin America & most of Asia. Good news for the planet. Bad news for Putin & the House of Saud.

And Republicans just gutted the Green New Deal, clean energy & environmental initiatives via budget reconciliation, & propped fossil fuels. Elections have consequences. This was preventable with a vote November 2024.

Norway shows it isn't inevitable and is an active choice of public policy, but the US turning into an oil exporter does shuffle things up. We got a bunch of rentiers who would lose from electrification.

I think that it was a tragic mistake for manufacturers not to embrace a two step approach in development in this country where vehicle range is a critical factor in consumer purchasing. Hybrids could have solved that.

It's not a mistake, it's market driven. U.S. is ~15% of the global car market and shrinking every year, and the one market that blabbers about range constantly. It's why the longer range domestic EVs aren't globally competitive.

Hybrids get better gas mileage than traditional engines, but they require the exact same maintenance with oil and filters and they tie us to the petroleum companies. Plus they have twice as many moving parts as a non-hybrid. It is not a future technology.

I agree with all this. I just think Toyota is such a juggernaut in terms of US car sales that pretty much what they say, goes. If I walk outside right now in Brooklyn the only sedans I'm going to see are going to be Camrys - most of which are hybrids.

And they would have been a perfect option for the last 5 years or so until we had developed a more comprehensive charging network and larger capacity batteries.

I have an ICE like most people - but I don't drive to work daily. I would absolutely love more options and infrastructure for EVs. Even though I have the option to take transit, many people don't and are forced to use ICE cars because that's what our infrastructure supports. We badly botched this!

Electric cars can work for practically everyone. America just likes to make excuses. There is probably just a handful of people in America an EV wouldn’t work for if shared housing had charging. Which is not hard to implement.

This really is it. Most Americans live in metro areas Most Americans drive <50 miles a day Most Americans drive <250 miles on road trips Most new vehicle buyers are home owners For most Americans, today's EVs work, and are a better option in terms of TCO and their Kid's health!

I feel like even when EVs make up almost all cars on the road if apartments just have 60-70% parking spots have chargers that would be plenty. Most people could go multiple days, maybe weeks without charging.

I think there's a big asterisk there in that cars in general aren't common in colder rural China relative to those areas in the US. That's where the use case for ICEs is going to continue. Pluralistic vehicle energy style makes more sense to me until charging infrastructure reaches the boonies.

A trade-in subsidy of up to $2,800 is helping here. Was 5.7% in 2020. A range extender of a small gas engine to charge the EV battery can extend range on some models to 229 miles per charge to 1000 miles. These are very popular in EVs in China.

There are EVs with more than that range already: Top 5 Longest Range Electric Cars (Approximate): Mercedes-Benz EQS Saloon: Up to 481 miles Lucid Air Grand Touring: Up to 516 miles Audi A6 e-tron: Up to 463 miles Polestar 3: Up to 438 miles Tesla Model 3 (Long Range): Up to 436 miles
