The American health system has always baffled me. Many years ago, I got very ill and had to have some really expensive, radioactive medicine. I'm an Englishman, so I got it all on the wonderful NHS. Those life extending chemicals would've cost me $10,000 every 2 weeks for 6 months in the USA. 🫤

Europe figured out universal healthcare after WWII. A vial of insulin costs $6 to make. In the U.S., it can sell for $300+. In most of Europe, $10–$20. This isn't healthcare, it's extortion. You shouldn't need a job, good credit, or GoFundMe to survive. Healthcare is a right, not a reward.

What makes me really sad is that when I moved to Texas from Alberta back in 92, I was blown away with how much better the health care was. For the same money I paid in Alberta. Since then, Canada has gotten cheaper and the insurance companies are much more powerful in the US thanks to the ACA.

I injured my heel two months ago and haven't been able to see a pediatrist because that requires a referral using the Emblem Health digital portal which is so buggy my primary care doctor gave up after 6 attempts and stopped accepting my insurance. Paying out of pocket is absurdly expensive.

"Out of pocket" costs are insane. All medical providers have a "non-insurance" rate that is 5-10 times higher than the insurance rate. Doctors call it the "fu" rate. The mark-up is because most out of pocket clients are poor and their unpaid bills are sold to wage garnishers for pennies on the $.

When I travelled in the US in the late eighties I found ordinary(!) americans very friendly and welcoming. Today I don’t dare to touch American soil, in fear for ICE repercussions. Can the US bounce back?, I wonder. (Movement requires mass.)

Sad but true and even with insurance good luck affording any health care. If you want to take care of your health be prepared to spend thousands on a single test plus what it will cost to have a doctor read and tell you your results. This health system is severely broken.

I’d hate to lose you, but completely support your safety. In that vein, I saw a few months back that Norway was accepting trans Americans as refugees. Norway has a high quality of life, great healthcare system, supports vacation time, & you can easily access the rest of Europe. Plus, it’s gorgeous.

A friend of mine moved to Norway years ago after doing a great deal of research to find the best place for her autistic, trans child, and that was before Norway announced it was approving asylum for trans American refugees. I hope you can find a way to get to safety. 🫶

AI is a tool, it goes where people want it to. If they take into account the Healthcare insurance concerns and profitability it can easily go that route. Happens all the time for software products, put the wrong 'flavor" in and the cake is ruined. Being a business and all, could happen.
