Tasting at ice cream shops should not be allowed. Getting the wrong flavor of ice cream is not a high stakes enough decision to justify multiple swings at it. Pick a flavor.

They should set up 3 separate lines: The Express Lane: For the decisive, impatient folks who just want their usual scoop and want out. The Tasting Lounge: For the ice cream enthusiasts who consider ordering an "experience" and need to sample five flavors first.

I’m absolutely on your side with this. One taste for a sketchy flavour makes some sense to me, but if it’s one of the more normal flavours… just go for it. But even I just yolo the fun flavours without tasting. I’ve never had something *so* bad I hated it 🤷‍♀️

You have clearly not tried Lapsang Souchong ice cream. I was very grateful that the staff *actively advised* me to try the free sample, first!

I mean if they actively advise trying a sample then that’s a different story and doesn’t count. Cause like I’ve tried a lotta ice cream. I’m a slut for ice cream. I’ve never had the staff warn me to sample a flavour first

I have never been in more agreement with you on anything. Folks who want to try more flavours should buy more ice cream and stop holding up the line.

I watched a woman at an ice cream shop the other day eye a group of 5 or 6 young folks walk in, and *immediately* tell them, "limit of 4 flavors to taste" (FOUR!). And I realized, the tasting is just part of the "I'm having a decadent experience" indulgence of the whole thing.

They know what Rocky Road tastes like. In the case of this place, they could even guess what the cardamom crunch tasted like.

Inefficiency is the very mark of luxury now. Tradwives on TikTok making an elaborate display of baking a cake for 6 hours. Efficiency is for the poors, until they're replaced by LLMs.

Given how much I love ice cream -- and enjoy the experience of going out for it -- it's pretty clear I'm missing something important here. Or maybe I am just getting old, and just no longer attuned to the ice cream zeitgeist. TL;DR: Wait, what? People regularly taste ice cream at ice cream shops?

I mean, I'm not naive - I HAVE seen the little spoons and cups, but I thought folks using them was like...a rare and uncommon occurrence, like when a new flavor comes out or something. I find myself ever-so-slightly ill at ease over my lack of awareness of the modern ice cream shop experience.

On the one hand: Have I become that out-of-touch old man everyone politely accommodates (or worse, ignores) as I try to figure out the "right" way to order? On the other hand: I'm still getting ice cream. Who cares about rules, let's go!

Nah just limit it to three max per customer or you go back thru the line and by the time you get to a human you should know the tastes you want.

Have some grace! If they’re not hemming and hawing and just saying “hey can I taste X” and doing it quickly, what’s the problem? Why is ice cream “low stakes” for them but so high stakes for you that you can’t wait 30 more seconds for it?

The context is that I live next door to an ice cream shop and their line is always like 50 people long and it's because every transaction takes 3x longer than it needs to if people would just pick a flavor. It offends my need for efficiency.

You would hate dutch gelato shops, the amount of indecision and discussion at the head of a 20 minute queue will make you want to kill people.
