I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I’m not saying I’m personally responsible for the Brewers’ impressive score last night But my 10yo wanted to watch so we allowed it from 9-9:30 and I specifically said “I don’t care if there are 2 outs and the bases are loaded and the home run guy steps up to the plate, I’m turning it off!”

When creating PDFs, avoid using "Print to PDF." A screen reader user may still be able to access the text of PDFs created this way, but heading structure, alternative text, and any other tag structure will be lost. Using "Save As" or "Export" can preserve these tags.

I get they're inextricably intertwined but I kind of feel like leaning so much into how he was the longtime best buddy of the world's most notorious sex criminal has given it something of the feel of a political gotcha rather than the important part, which is that the president raped people.

I don’t understand this reference but my non-sports husband just said “they’re Eukering this” and I know the reference is Bob Euker (sp?) but I don’t know why it’s relevant to this MLB game.

Fellow Camberville-area folks, please help out these local organizers if you can! They were hit with a massive tax bill on money they collected and distributed for mutual aid in the early pandemic days.

There are people, even some trans people, who think that we can give up sports to appease bigots. That if we give up on sports, this all goes away. That is a lie. I have reported on this for years, and EVERY state that passed a sports ban as a moderate compromise has gone on to pass worse.

As I fight, advocate and spend more than I have out of pocket for therapy for my household, I have to wonder: If someone did a bunch of deep research into the history of school shooters, rapists, etc How many of them had (parents try or) tried to get help but were failed by health insurance?

How many never started treatment or stopped before complete, because it was too expensive? How much of the US’ ridiculous violence has been encouraged by our terrible health insurance system? Has anyone done this study?

I've learned over the years that when someone calls in distress, I shouldn't ask if I should come over. Instead I say "I'm already in the car, unless you don't want me there" because people are terrified to bother each other, especially when they're already vulnerable. The call *is* the ask. Go.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Fun fact: detaining Rabbis for Human Rights and other groups for actions like protecting olive harvests has been happening the whole time too. Before 2017 a local IDF commander might detain folks by declaring a “closed military zone” to “stop active clashes between harvesters and settlers”.

This post is unavailable.

Were those “clashes” mostly unrelated or was it actually the settlers annoyed at the protection that started clashes? Hard to know. Starting around 2017, for seven years, a pattern of refusing entry into Israel for a small number of international activists emerged.

Starting after Oct 7 2023, there is a clear, active, top-down movement by the Israeli government to reduce and eliminate outside documentation of West Bank harvesting (and thus the Israeli government and army’s effects thereupon). Mass refusals, many more deportations/expulsions, 5-6x detentions.

In my 7yo’s class each kid gets a week. One day they bring in their favorite toy, another their favorite book, etc Thursdays they dance to the kid’s favorite song What did my kid say her favorite song is? Friends, my daughter is rickrolling her teacher and classmates I couldn’t be prouder.

So there’s a road near Davis Square in Somerville, named ”Meachem Road”. About 20 years ago I told my then-boyfriend, now-husband “yeah just turn a right on Meachem.” Except I didn’t pronounce it as it was intended - MEECH-am - first syllable rhymes with breach

Oh no you see I’m Jewish so I pronounced it may-AH-chem, where the ch is the guttural chet sound. I stand by it to this day. It’s 3 syllables.

When you have a travesty as large as the city’s response to homelessness, it should be a no-brainer to try things like this that have worked for other cities. We can’t just keep trying to bulldoze people out of existence. We have to try new responses if we ever want to actually solve this problem.

On April 5, 1977, people with disabilities occupied government buildings across the country with simple demands: access to education, jobs, and public spaces. It has been fifty years since the Section 504 sit-ins, but the fight for those with disabilities continues.

It took me a bit to figure out if this was a fake Mike Minogue ad, paid for by Andrea James, or an opposition mailer paid for by Mike Minogue that is the best advertising James could get…. FYI check out the donors, if you didn’t know Arthur Demoulas of Market Basket was a huge Republican donor……

Slavery was and is a real thing that has brutalized hundreds of millions of people over the course of human history, if someone tells me a fucking chatbot is enslaved I'm immediately throwing hands. It's not cute, it's not intriguing, it's an insult to real people who suffered and suffer now.

Kelly Clarkson isn’t putting us in danger, but do you know what is? Massachusetts ballot questions 3, 5, and 8. Vote no on 3, 5, and 8.

Please note a "Yes" vote for ballot Question #9 is to protect a life-saving, comprehensive gun safety law already on the books. #9 is a referendum. In contrast, ballot questions 1 - 8 are initiatives to make new laws.

Massachusetts!!!

Jonathan Cohn @jonathancohn.bsky.social

I got my ballot in the mail today, and it was 3 pages and 5 sides. Which, to me, is a great reminder of how you should vote No on 3, No on 5, and No on 8 (3+5) But remember: there are 9 questions, and you need to get to the end to vote yes on 9.
