"The minutes of the DSA meetings show participants discussing contacts with officials from China ... Chinese officials did not take part in the meetings themselves, but met with members in China and encouraged the DSA to set up exchanges, according to the minutes." yeah that's a FARA violation

That's a bit silly. Then the National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute probably qualifies as well. As do AIPAC which several times faced initiatives that they would be required to register.

Don’t like that one bit. Not sure how much it matters as a prudential defense against foreign actors given Hungary paid for CPAC (I actually think US politics is basically a proxy fight on the world stage) but this is a wild level of self sabotage via nincompoopery.

Have you read any of their platforms? They’re the epitome of Trump.Chaos agents never really believe in anything. They prey on politically ignorant & anyone associated w/DSA are not who they pretend to be.It’s also why voters figure them out quickly & their numbers haven’t grown post squad

Oh Jesus, this is stupid. Why would the DSA possibly want to have anything to do with the CCP? The Republican attack ads will write themselves. And unfortunately they'll be rooted in something true this time. We should be focused on Trump, but Dems will be forced to talk about this instead.

It's actually not. I can't figure out how the benefits of aligning with an authoritarian kleptocracy justify the risks of doing so. I'm not a right winger freaked out about the CCP hiding behind every bush. But don't leftists know by now that the CCP isn't going to help them usher in socialism?

FARA violations require the individual to be working at the order, request, or under the direction of a foreign principal. If the DSA members instigate this stuff their alignment isn't inherently relevant is it? Nothing in the article suggests the CCP is orchestrating what they do?

look, i know its newsweek but given they are just quoting from the minutes that the DSA folks were taking (is you taking notes on a criminal conspiracy etc etc) saying "we're meeting with china to push their views", there's no good explanations/etc here.

I've only ever been DSA adjacent, but it always seemed to me that the folks who had foreign policy opinions beyond "hey Israel is doing bad shit" were the most likely to be campist weirdos

The PSL is extremely controlled by PRC interests in a way I had generally figured the DSA is not, even though the DSA has some campist weirdos, but I wonder if efforts by PSL people to influence the DSA (there’s a lot of overlap where I live) are affecting this.

Is it tho? Ideological support isn't a crime, just morally & politically wrong. Plus it's Zombie Newsweek & the author also wrote this nonsense. And drags in Mamdani as a hook even tho he's not part of or close to the International Committee www.newsweek.com/chinese-scie...

newsweek.comChinese scientists have been dying mysterious deaths tooAs the US questions the untimely deaths or the disappearances of top scientists, China is grappling with the same mystery at home.

They once platformed views like "dismantling of USAID" Who are corporate Dems? Define them Has any of their supposed positions 'unalived' hundred of thousands children across the Global South? I know DSA's have Why would you even contest elections if you believe your nation deserves suffering?

(I'm trying to find more resources for folks who want insight into how it works--but several of the site were convoluted legalese regarding FARA policy development...sooo if you find some stuff, feel free to share! )

Politically active Americans talk with politically active foreigners all the time, that’s not a FARA violation. Obama’s campaign team worked for the Tories, half the GOP went to Hungarian CPAC…

YIKES! Nah man, this party is doing problematic things. To an outside observer, this vindicates the seemingly outlandish claims against the DSA. It may be fucked as soon as more of this info comes to public light.

Counterpoint, no it isn't. Meeting with other foreign, nominally communist parties is not FARA violation unless at minimum there is some attempt to lobby or influence the US government at the direction of said national government.
