Anthropic cumulative operating loss since inception is only $12 billion and at their current run rate operating margin they will completely recoup that loss by Q1 27 even if revenue is flat. So much for “these companies will never make money” lmao

Just fucked up.

This article is back up and (sigh) is I guess essential reading for why so many things about AI in the valley are weird right now. It does have the character of a mythos text -- not only do you go a little crazy reading it, *explaining it* might get you flagged as mad.

An attempt to document important facts concerning AI Safety, Eliezer Yudkowsky, Rationalism and San Francisco Effective Altruism tldr definitely a millenarian death cult www.verysane.ai/p/ai-safety-...

Just returning to this; Even if you had no values and believed nothing was worth fighting for isn't Yglesias at least worried that *appearing weak* is bad marketing for any type of public campaign? I mean that's what this is: ceding ground & appeasement. And it shows!

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

on some level, this is just a form of anti-politics.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

The retirees who run the ice cream social in my neighborhood showed up for rapid response when ICE was in my neighborhood. Somehow a bunch of nimby coded upper middle-class homeowners were more in touch with why fighting is *urgent* and *necessary* than this moral weakling.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

This is a pretty good take. The only thing I'd add is to remind people that the regulation proposed by Anthropic and OpenAI is more or less design to ensure only a bareful handful of companies control this technology, and not regulation in the sense of 'hey you are liable what your tech does'.

We should also be aware that at least one wing of the far left has been capture by Yudkowsky and AI-doomerism: Sanders and (unfortunately) AOC have a law written by that faction designed to shut this technology down.

Probably their motivation is quashing would-be oligarchs (hard to resist), but I have to think a law pushed and backed by a man who wants to nuke datacenters because they might build a machine god is not a good model either.

It also correctly points out the Trump administration cannot be relied upon to enforce *existing* laws, because to Trump regulations exist as a lever for him to pick and choose winners & losers based on who is most loyal to him.

just clicked for me that the reason clyburn went on tv in winter '24 and said biden should pardon trump was bc he knew that he was under investigation for corruption (which he did do, per propublica). so how much of his decision to avoid fighting trump these last two years has been bc of that?

Just to be super precise: This one is about a different co-founder than the other one. I think the organization's reputation for uh, 'excellence' should convince that anybody trading on the name in a future venture should raise many questions.

I actually do think we are in for a < 5 year period of grotesque chaos, and then we will have software psychohistory and get more stable, reliable software. I say this not as an optimist but a realist about capabilities.

Absolutely nothing successful functions like this. If a company you transacted with one time texted and emailed you with the same frequency as do the Democrats and their groups, you would light their headquarters on fire.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Best way to understand MAGA is as a version of the Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action" but instead of basing their society around an old book about gangland Chicago they based it on the Epstein Files.

Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"

What if the chaos could be compressed to a single 3 year period? Also a second team of researchers will be running abliterated models at Star's End.

this is temporary and it will end. it's fine. we just need to not bungle it for the next year or three.
