There really is something special about what Zohran and Brad are showing the rest of the world what it still means to be a New Yorker and an American. A Jew and a Muslim modeling a politics of mutual respect, rejecting cynicism. Human decency has been taking a beating but she's not out just yet!

i'm not a new yorker but from my outside perspective, this seems to be the kind of thing that the city is all about - people of virtually every background imaginable working together, diligently, empathetically, and cleverly, for a better city and a better tomorrow

Aside from the political implications for this relationship, the fact that Mamdani and Lander can not only work together but support and respect each other gives hope as well as inspiration.

It is neither necessary nor inevitable that we split into weird little gated paranoid ethnostates! Multiracial democracy is still very much a thing with lots of people who believe in it! People who need people are STILL the luckiest people in the world! I love you so much New York. 😭

That’s one of the positive side effects of ranked choice voting - candidates benefit from cooperating with other similar candidates and their supporters rank the similar candidate second. They don’t take votes from each other as in traditional voting.

It demonstrates empathy over cynicism and that those who are authentic and genuinely care for their constituents will prevail. It’s time to bring back compassion and virtue and shun the vicious and selfish.
