As does Chicago :) bsky.app/profile/sluc...
Here’s a pic from today, a 2” copper drain (from a single floor drain) immediately upsizing to 3” cast iron even before it joins with the other drain.
Is there no union issue? You'll recall that this was on the list of issues that affected Gray Davis' recall in CA: bsky.app/profile/dbon...
As I recall it, he took the plumber's union position against cheaper pvc piping in order to hold their political support. But that was a small issue among many ... still, enough to motivate one engineer (no, not me) to run against him in the chaotic replacement election that gave us Arnold.
Definitely a big union issue. There are some weird dynamics between Mamdani and the construction trades. He campaigned on having all affordable housing be union-built, then deemphasized that as soon as he started gaining traction and then dropped it entirely as mayor. And then he was cagey up until…
My vague sense is that drainage piping basically never gets repaired, it just stays in the walls for a few generations until it gets replaced. @pipedreaming.bsky.social?
If someone needed to replace a single cast-iron pipe, like because it corroded, replacing it wouldn’t require sawing or welding PVC since they could just remove the couplings to replace the pipe (like below). You can also do this with push-fit plastic piping but that’s still mostly a Euro thing.
Looks like they gave up on microblogging entirely when the schism happened x.com/nycfuture
