I am a little surprised how badly Connie Chan did at yesterdays debate for #CA11 - No single concrete policy proposal - Doubled down on her opposition of car-free streets - Claimed Geary BRT was built when the current 38R barely qualifies as BRT

She also could not articulate her opposition to housing projects aside from talking about it being a "compromise", and basically said she approved enough housing in Mission Bay so it is okay that they didn't build in her district (?!?).

Even as someone who is more in the YIMBY camp, it is not that hard to come up with legit concerns about market rate housing construction. It just seems like her alternative is *not* large-scale social housing development, but keeping the existing inventory and subsidizing rent.

It was especially strange that @conniechansf.bsky.social's main attack on Wiener was that his AI regulation bill was supposedly not strong enough. That may be true, but it felt out of place considering she has virtually no legislative record to stand on.

What started as simply wanting to be able to store my bike at work has turned into a quest in trying to understand how/if San Francisco enforces certain ordinances. Frustratingly, a mayor can simply not sufficiently staff a department, instead of changing city code they don't like.

As a result, city leaders get the best of both worlds: they can claim that they support environmentally-friendly modes of transportation, because the laws supporting those modes still exists on paper, while at the same time effectively abolishing laws those same laws.

It's sad that, in the best-case scenario, the next few presidents will mostly spend their time cleaning up the mess that the current administration left behind.

San José's population density (5.6k/sqm) is only a third of San Francisco's (18.6k/sqm). They should aim to at least double their population.

It's genuinely a massive problem that the median voter both 1) believes "criminal illegal immigrants" to be an astronomically more serious threat than they actually are, and 2) believes that the legal immigration process is substantially easier than it actually is.

I understand your position, but those are different situations. People straight up both envision a system much milder than exists and cannot imagine a modern world without that imaginary system. By default they have no real grasp of reality on the matter, but are usu. sympathetic to individuals.

It is ironic how many people oppose speed cameras because of supposed mass surveillance, but are totally onboard with AVs.

When I see "Waymo saves lives" op-eds, I always do a quick search to see what the author has written extolling protected bike lanes. Or automatic speed cameras. Or road diets. The results are always the same: Nope. Nada. Zilch.

Similarly, using your cellphone while driving is only $50. I do not understand how endangering others has so little consequences.

If you’re an establishment Democrat who is concerned about Democratic socialists taking over your party, you should support proportional representation. The current two party system forces us into the same party—let’s make a new party system and let the voters decide.

Valencia Street easily has more bike commuters during rush hour than cars, yet people will still complain that “no one uses them.”

It is so strange to me how few -- especially young -- people vote. In California there is same day registration, universal vote by mail, and a long early voting period. Still, in my precinct the primary turnout was under 20%.

"e-bike shame" is a fascinating social dynamic. e-bikes are a kind of mobility aid. People don't use the term, but they recognize it. So e-biking gets a stigma, like walking with a walker gets a stigma. And like walkers, wheelchairs, etc, using a more-assistive car instead isn't stigmatized.

It is already absurd that he helped wreck the UK with Brexit and then just sailed off to the US. But him now pretending like this qualifies him to be governor of California is — to use one of his favorite words — ridiculous.

CNN hosted a debate for #CA governor, but there's no way to watch it without a paid subscription. I do not get why not all debates for a public office aren't hosted on public broadcasting, or at least are made available for free.

Having a gubernatorial debate at 5:30pm when many people are not even home from work yet is a choice...

Nothing says #SanFrancisco cares about pedestrian safety more than city workers parking in crosswalks in a school zone.

Imagine a European leader coming to California and attacking the federal government, like JD Vance just attacked "EU bureaucrats" in Hungary.

The world not screeching to a halt when the US killed more than 100 little school girls on the very first day of this "liberating war" led us exactly to this moment

Next year San Francisco will most likely repave Mission St with the same configuration: a continuous bus lane only in one direction and plenty of interference with parking cars. Our neighborhood deserves proper bus rapid transit, and the city a reliable north-south connection.
