I've seen the following cycle play out a million times: 1. Progressives implement some well-meaning but flawed attempt to address a problem. 2. "Centrists" attack the flaws, with the intention of replacing it with something better. 3. RW media amplifies the attacks, creating a media din. ...

what if centrists pithier “politics about what’s feasible” or Pelosi’s “art of the possible” easy to debate 345,678 residents/Rep (more responsive & harder to g.mander) and PRico (3.2M residents) should be 50th state (after merging Dakotas 1.7M residents) 60+ Senate still rules

I see this with broadband policy constantly especially via the "abundance" folks who don't study a subject before they confidently weigh in

I wrote about it some here. the abundance guys will read right wing criticism of policy and then build their policy based on that, without bothering to do actual research into what they're talking about I saw it repeatedly with Ezra Klein and broadband

techdirt.comJon Stewart And Ezra Klein Help GOP Paint Infrastructure Bill Broadband Grants As A Useless BoondoggleWe’ve long noted how the 2021 infrastructure bill included $42.5 billion for broadband dubbed the Broadband, Equity, Access And Deployment (BEAD) program. Managed by the NTIA and individual s…

This is on par with progressives implement the most pragmatic plan possible only to have the far left criticize it to hell which gets picked up and amplified by the right wing.

Yes but sometimes the roles are reversed. It's the centrists that come up with a solution, but doesn't go far enough for the Leftists. Regardless RW media is adept at amplifying intraparty fissures.

There's a pretty big objectives gap between non-politically affiliated academics and centrist pundits. The pundits who need clicks and normies who unknowingly stir are manipulated here by the bad actors; it's not particularly the fault of academics that any of their good-faith work is abused. (1/3)

Totally fair to critique the result of academic research which exposes a few flaws of certain left-wing proposals and then the ratcheting to the right that occurs. I do agree; many seem painfully unaware of the manipulation that goes on after they publish, and they need to correct the record (2/3)

There should be a push for academic prowess to be applied exposing these bad actors. "How much of x persons content is a lie or exaggeration?" "How is news manipulated?" It's started but we need more. Then centrist pundits, academics and lefties will need to make normies aware of this cycle (3/3)

4. The well-meaning but flawed attempt is destroyed. 5. It is not replaced with anything better. You could really fit the entire "anti-woke" thing into this frame, but there are endless examples. What I *never, ever* see, no matter how many times it happens ...

... is any of the centrists showing any awareness of this dynamic, or expressing any concern about it, or approaching their latest attacks on progressives with any *care*, any attempt to prevent this dynamic from playing out yet again.

I mean, to pick just one example out of the pile: maybe you, as a self-proclaimed centrist, think "allowing trans kids to play on whatever sports team they want" isn't the right way to navigate that issue. Maybe you want something more "moderate" or whatever. Let's be generous & grant that. So ...

... do you worry *at all* that, by pushing critiques of trans kids to the center of media attention, where they are relentlessly amplified by RW bad actors, you might be unleashing something that will go much farther than you want, and end in a place you find horrific?

I love you so much but this is a wonderful example of the wrong solution to the right problem. I would love centrists to get moral BIGGER, but then they'd be progressives, not centrists.

If you compromise your principles then you really don't have any. Equal rights and equal justice for all under the Constitution is a fundamental bedrock American principle. That is different from ordinary policy differences such as how to raise revenue, streamline regulation, etc.

The moral capacity of the centrist is BARELY bigger than the moral capacity of the conservative. If progressives don't fix the problem, the problem isn't getting fixed. You have to grow your HEART to serve upstream harm reduction. Not cast blame down the pretend hierarchical ladder serving profit

Step 3 and how it cynically plays out over and over again to the detriment of Dems’ own centrists is crazy to me. The centrist Dems just let it happen! Don’t they want to win? Only on their terms it seems.

That would require both sides of the centrist-left divide to put aside their tribalism and I think what we're seeing around us is that even the literal triumph of fascism won't make that happen. I despair.

This has been the Republican playbook for a few decades now. Point out flaws but offer zero solutions. Fear and hate from them. That's it. It's unfortunate that the strategy works with so many.

I think your point 2 is bullshit. Rarely do "centrists" intend to do anything better than kill the so-called "flawed" program. Centrists usually claim the program "wastes" our well-earned tax dollars.

But in their minds they're just trying to help, is what his point is. Which explains why centrist think tanks and policy speak are incredibly insufferable to begin with

the well-meaning but flawed part is the only salient part of this. centrists are centrists because they are too timid and/or bought-off to do anything. we need to make sure the policies we put into the world WORK or we don't deserve to govern.

You would almost think the problem is how much better the conservatives are at selling an emotionally framed story about a false reality rather than the progressive failure to sell an emotional story about a TRUE reality.. but no, it must be the willingness to criticize destroying the world 🤨

I've also seen this from the left inward. The ACA is the classic example; it was a significant step forward that was meant to be built upon, but it was not what the left wanted so it was declared worse than nothing by people who should know better.

Random people online aside though there weren't people at the left flank of the party tanking the ACA vote because it wasn't a public option or Medicare for all. The actual sabotage of things that would help people invariably comes from the right of the party.

The people that I recall were actually a problem were the Blue Dogs led by Lieberman. Pelosi got a better version passed in the House, and it was watered down in reconciliation because of Lieberman. But at least we got something, and that something saved me from going bankrupt.

It was tanked by the GOP, which we didn't need but Obama and the administration wanted the appearance of bipartisanship. So they watered it down to GOP standards, who, like Lucy and the football, changed their minds and said it was all terrible anyways.

it was originally stronger, but they wanted the perceived legitimacy of bipartisan legislation, not realizing that era was long gone and the GOP was taken over by the tea party, soon to morph into MAGA.

Paul Krugman wrote many explanations of the “3-legged stool” Obamacare was built on, and why it was basically the only possible solution given political realities. (Possible exception was the stillborn Public Option, which IIRC was killed by Manchin?)

I remember self-proclaimed "progressive" FDL demanding that Congress "kill the [healthcare] bill" because it didn't solve the problem a specific way. Even though the imperfect bill brought relief to me and millions of Americans. I started distancing myself from "progressives" after that.

Just a point about 1: all solutions to problems involve compromises because of cost or feasibility or to garner enough support to pass. Of course they will be flawed because under these conditions ideal solutions are not possible if we could all even agree on what an ideal solution would be.

I see: 1. ppl who want to divide the electorate into progs vs centrists as if theres no in-btwn, 2. ppl who are liberal in their thinking & activism, derogatorily called centrist or liberal bc they dont burn wanna everything to the ground, 3. ppl calling progs far left 😄 It's all stupid.

Funny, I see the reverse. You propose a program to address a problem, and instantly, 27 leftist groups start attacking it because it doesn't also address their pet issue. But half those issues conflict with each other. By the time you can satisfice, the program is utterly broken.

My favorite was an attempt in DC local politics to form a left-of-center coalition, as the vote splitting was putting in corrupt right-of-center types. One crew from the local homeless support org shut down every discussion that wasn't about the homeless by shouting "Rich people's problems!!!".

It was - and on some level that compromise position often is, for a little while. But weakening it, taking out the public option, making it harder to access (the website everyone hates), contributed inevitably to its gradual collapse. Which is exactly what we're talking about here

You know what would have helped? If the left hadn't been attacking it from the moment it passed until literally now. If they'd been trying to improve it instead of holding out for single payer or bust. But alas.

There is no gradual collapse of the ACA, there is GOP destruction. Taking out the public option was the price extracted by Joe Lieberman to get anything passed. “The website everyone hated” stopped being an issue c. 2011. ACA approval had gone up steadily every year since passage.

I think the whole "well rich kids shouldn't get free lunches" comes from an understandable place as a layperson but for anyone who pays attention these are absolutely bad-faith attacks that undermine the foundation of a program, because once there's a line, that line is easy to move

That's comforting, if you're on the left and simply want to dismiss everyone to your right as comically evil, thus simplifying things for yourself, but I don't think it's true.

If you've dealt with lawmakers you know that the biggest factor driving political inertia is fear of unintended consequences. If there were a way to stay in office without ever having to vote on anything, that's their perfect world. Stasis is not good a governing principle. Things do need doing.

Swap "Progressives" for "Centrists" and liberals for Progressives and you're on to something. Examples: ACA, Inflation Reduction Act, student aid relief, etc. I mean you're an EV guy, weren't there significant investments in EV infrastructure in the IRA that liberal Biden pushed?

The Right will attack ANYTHING in Dem world - both the media and MAGA. They don't care what it is, and don't have any interest in what reality is. Are we now supposed to pander to them for some reason? Who the f* cares anymore what they say? They elected a traitor who attacked his own country.

They are shit people who don't give a f*ck about anything but themselves. What they say is irrelevant; they have no values, standards, or decency. They elected a literal criminal to the presidency of the United States. They should be ignored and shunned.

You forgot the part where the legislation gets riddled with flaws by centrists before it passes. Progressives haven’t had enough power to pass anything for my entire life, it’s all been compromised by centrists.
