My conspiracy theory about genAI in games blowing up more and more by big companies is that they’ve all got a ton of investors insisting they use genAI tools otherwise they(investors) won’t be able to bankroll em anymore

Genuinely, this feels like studio heads are going hat in hand to investors and they’re all asking “How if your team making use of AI?” and if they say no the investors wince a bit, mutter amongst themselves and have to respectfully decline to give over any money.

Genuinely a lot of the front facing pro-AI PR feels like it’s just chum in the water for the sharks. Someone’s they’re hoping “They’re all gonna see this and the we’ll have to fight of the moneybags with a stick!”. These announcements are not for US as consumers, they’re all for the investors.

Not to mention that I can only assume a lot of people are feeling super gun shy after the huge surge in investments during COVID not having as many large returns as they expected or may have been promised.

If you are told to use AI and all you have to do is say 'we are using AI' because there is actually no way to prove you *aren't* using it, backlash and ethics aside it's easy money.

I know of places where managers do check token usage, or whatever else they can, while forcing developers to vibe code. Maybe that is then turned into some "adoption" statistics for investors. Which really does spell how good and valuable this tech is, eh?

Makes sense I would imagine using GenAI in the concept art or hyper artistic stages would be the easiest to fake use. A lot of it just sounds like when you were told to show your working out in exams and you solved it first then made it up xD

in theory, yes, but this is way more about culture and group dynamics than actual output people that follow these trends behave and talk like they do and they tend to have a keen eye for 'outsiders' if they dont seem enthusiastic enough about it at every opportunity

a lot of what people consider to be 'entrepreneurship' and 'vision' its just being emotional about the hot new stuff, so if youre not, youre just not fit for growth and success

I don't think this is a conspiracy at all. The dev space, not only games, is pretty much entirely owned (directly or not) by private equities that are betting big into the success of gen AI

I mean it's definitely this. Investment in games disappeared, and investors are only interested in AI. For the time being one of the few ways to get investment money is to say you're using AI and won't be "left behind" when things "inevitably" lift off.

there's no theory about it, the CEO of my company directly instructed everyone to integrate it in their workflows in *any way possible* they also fired anyone not open to it and it is now part of the studio's hiring requirements to be "vocally passionate about ai"

I've setup a machine learning tool from some open-source libraries I found online that identifies game item sprites that appear on gameplay videos of other games in our niche, for some statistical analysis and balancing research, & all throughout I just called it all "AI" without further explanation

the more disconnected people are from the daily operations, the more they fantasize about all the ways the hot new thing can revolutionize it all leadership always thinks its a 9-pregnant-ladies-1-month-baby game but workers knows exacly how and why none of it actually helps doing the actual work

I saw some exec post about having done that at his company so microsoft can get off his ass about using Copilot. He invented numbers and productivity projections and they believed him.

I had papers at doc's office asking for consent to use AI to record & summarize notes during appts. I didn't sign it. Text to speech isn't AI. I don't need AI to summarize doc's notes. As much as I pay in GD insurance, I expect the doc to listen & write 😠🙄 + what if ai notes summarize incorrectly?

NVIDIA needed to sell more graphic cards to they paid video games companies to go crazier with graphics, and now NVIDIA needs to sell more GPUs to AI data centers, so they need more data centers to be built. This conspiracy theory doesn't even need red markers and barely uses any paper.

I mean I wish it was just this but its also managers and such thinking it'll save time or just wanting to ride the next "cool" new tech and ignoring actual line devs.
