Wait? Are you implying that there is another kind? Isn't the whole point of parenthood becoming the one who issues the "because I said so" instead of the one stymied by the edict?

Yeah.... and I'm so glad the next generation of parenting has stopped that! Questioning authority is a MUST!

My adult kids still mind when I give them my " LOOK"...I learned that from my mother...she had that too especially at the dinner table where she also had a wooden cookspoon next to her plate...I didn't go that far...

"Because I said so" is the essence of Trickle Down Syndrome (TDS). "God said it, I believe it, that settles it." "Trump said it, I believe it, that settles it." "I said so, you have to accept it, that settles it." There's no room for critical questions in a mind closed to other POVs.

My mom did use it a couple of times, but usually on stuff I was arguing about that had already been discussed a million times. Though when she started living with me and I was taking care of her. I responded back with her "Cause I said so." and she glared at me and then said "I deserved that."

I'm really thankful my boomer Hippie parents didn't roll like that. Of course there were times where it was obvious that the answer is no, period. But they wanted us to understand why. Most of the time I pled my case the answer was still no 🤣, but they did really good to discuss it first with us 🩷❤️

I was at a friends house and one of her kids comes up to her and says "I'm bored" OMFG. That was something you NEVER said to my mom because she's got something for you to do. Oh hell yeah our house was never lacking in chores for bored kids to do.

I grew up in a house where if you were told to do something and you didn't do it, you got a pot up side the head. You responded, oh, you meant take the trash out now. You learn quickly to do what you are told, my cousin learned that the hard way. Also "because I said so" worked as well.

Which is kind of intellectually toxic IMO. Kids should be taught that their decisions should be based on expressible, rational reasons. That said, my kid probably has it easy because I can't in good conscience punish him for something I can't actually prove he's responsible for.

I've never complied in my entire life with a 'because I said so'. Everyone, even children, deserves an explanation when they ask for one imo

oh no, when that line was used by my mom it was usually the start of the fight. when she pulled out something to spank us THAT was the end of the argument.

As a single parent I raised my daughter to believe that if I were making a rule or decision that she disagreed with she should challenge me on it and try to persuade me otherwise. That way she learned to reason out her own decisions. She's now a successful fantasy writer.

Someone hasn't had a kid that used "Why?" to extend the time they don't have to do the thing they're being told to do enough times that they bloody well know why. So "because I said so becomes the default"

You can ASSUME that's why they do it but the fact is kids ask questions all the time. And once they hit their teens they start realizing stuff without reason is kinda pointless. My mom would tell me to take out the trash when it only had a single paper towel and why wouldn't i ask why?

I grew up in a household where if you were told to do something and you didn’t do it the first time, you got your ass beat from one end of the house to the other. I never got an ass beating I didn’t deserve. Thanks Mom and Dad for making me the man I am today. I love you…

My eldest brother who is younger than I. Was attempting to play his guitar a Christmas gift. Our mother said stop playing. When he didn't she asked in a sticker tone, or I'll break it over your back. He didn't take the hint. He got a New guitar for his birthday the following month. 🇮🇪🇪🇺

Fascism starts at home. Haven’t spoken to my magat parents in years after they pulled this BS on my daughter (their grandkid) during the orange felon’s first term. Have a good reason and articulate it. Use non-physical corrective measures. Kids still hate it but less trauma later in life.

Brittle parenting. It outs you as capricious, and willing to use outsized coercion at the drop of a hat. You demand to be seen as an enemy not an ally and wonder why your children dislike and fear you.

Why do people talk like this is a good thing? I taught my kids why I did things, why I decided, and encouraged them to debate (within reason). Turns out, sometimes I had missed something or their idea was better.

Except that’s not the concept here. I’ve grown up around families like that and I’ve had my share of it as well. It’s not “I’ve explained this enough”, it’s “I shouldn’t have to explain it at all”, and even today I still see adults who can’t be bothered because they think kids owe them obedience.

Which never fucking explained anything and encouraged me to continue going against the rule as I had zero understanding of why it was a rule in the first fucking place

I literally told my kids I would not be a “I said so” mom. Sometimes I gave them more explanation than I think was appropriate but in the end they appreciated the honestly in my follow up to “why not?”

And oh boy does it feel amazing when the tables are turned and you get to be shitty to your elderly parents the same way they were shitty to you! It just sucks that, as an adult, you can't beat the helpless old people with belts, the way they beat you when you were a helpless child.

I don't plan on ever seeing my abusive ass of an incubator ever again. I feel sorry for whatever nursing home she ends up in.

Never used this rationale as a parent. It was very important to me that my kids learn how to question authority. But boy, I knew a lot of kids growing up that had parents like that.

My parents met on the debating team. So there were RULES for having a discussion. If you broke the rules, you lost. I was introduced at a young age to the concept of fallacies, and how to recognize and counter them. This made me extremely unpopular with school teachers and administrators.

We talked a lot about world affairs and politics. We sometimes disagreed. Dad would say sorry or I would. But he was right about not assassinating Saddam Hussein in 1992. I was wrong

My boomer parents didn't use this on us unless the topic was already discussed 15 times and the answer is no (Phish concert in Boston when I was 15 and yes I'm still mad but even back then I understood why). They said they were raising future adults and wanted us to know how to argue our side 🩷

The worst part for me wasn't even the beating with his belt... it was being told to go get his belt! I had the extra time to think about what was coming. 😦 ---
