Interesting (to me, at least) encounter yesterday with an axe-wielding killer:

Rick@13rrk13.bsky.social

I was out getting steps when a homeowner called me over. I turned. He started approaching me and I saw that he was holding a hatchet. He asked me a question - I think it was something like ‘Can you help me?’ ‘Not when you’re holding an axe!,’ I half-yelled. Story 🧵. Semi-spoiler: Snake!

Armed ICE agents are moving through Puerto Rican neighborhoods with assault rifles, threatening residents who film them with pepper spray. In Villa Capri, a restaurant owner refused agents entry when they tried to enter without a warrant. Watch and share everywhere!

Publicly traded private prison companies are one of the more disgusting symptoms of this current moment, and something that (hopefully) will look very bad to our children

We need a more serious conversation about parity, like, how often do fans of the Dodgers or Yankees or Red Sox or etc have to face a decade of non-competitive baseball, when they know they will be awful for most of it and a .500 team only accidentally?

Katie Zacharia isn't an attorney but calls herself one. Not good. But I don't think it's great that this is the thing much of the legal profession and media are up in arms about. White House lawbreaking, lies, corruption? It depends. Couch your language. Inappropriate credentialism? How DARE she!

Katie Zacharia completed law school, got a law degree, but didn't pass the bar! And yet she calls herself a lawyer!!! She shouldn't do that. Russell Vought has a law degree, didn't pass the bar, and has done much worse than Zacharia. But he doesn't call himself a lawyer, so it gets less criticism.

Inflation ran at a rate of 3.7% last month. And that was despite the Fed raising interest rates. It’s been at least 3.4% every month since Trump attacked Iran. To put that in perspective: In the supposedly horrific year of 2024, monthly inflation averaged 2.9% and was trending down rather than up.

Just a personal anecdote, but working on a VAWA application was the most disheartening thing I did as a pro bono lawyer. It required an incredible amount of "evidence" only to put a woman and her children in the spotlight of law enforcement.

As an aside, when the police come and mess up your house (break down the door, destroy your stuff) because they are coming to "help" a victim, they do not pay to help repair it. A few victims I spoke with didn't have front doors because they couldn't afford to fix it.

Feels like we're nearing the phase of a Trump administration where erstwhile lackeys start leaking scandals and—eventually flee the sinking ship to claim that they were always making a principled stand against MAGA etc etc.

It would be wild if Lindsey Graham’s prophecy about Republicans picking Trump and getting crushed came true in his sister’s senate bid in South Carolina

Worth watching: South Carolina Dems are starting to roll out ads featuring GOPers endorsing Dem Annie Andrews. On our pod, Jalisa Washington-Price, who runs a PAC, says a $2 million ad buy is set to feature a former GOP lawmaker from a deep red county: newrepublic.com/article/2163...

With so many copycats in MLB, let’s hope this is the next trend — a player who strives for base hits rather than selling out for home runs, which brings the inevitable avalanche of strikeouts. So much more fun to watch hitters get on base. www.wsj.com/sports/baseb...

What was really up with all that "vibe shift" stuff after the 2024 election? Like, what was the environment like, what was going on with members of the media that they bought this? I'm genuinely curious.

I really hope people understand that stories like this are not anomalies or “mistakes.” They’re not the result of hospitals misunderstanding the law or legislative growing pains. This is simply what happens when you allow the government to interfere in pregnancy.

Evidence tech leaders know AI business relies on theft and knowingly pursued it is most relevant for court. But the biggest detail to me is their worry that putting content creators out of business means AI will get worse. If it’s so much smarter and better than us, have it create its own content.
