Am I the only one who went from thinking this was sly satire to suspecting that it isn't?

Next door in Silicon Valley@nextdoorsv.bsky.social

Wow. A lot of you idiots on this website seem to think there should be more housing and families in your community. But have you ever thought about the dangers like this person on NextDoor so clearly articulates?

I have read a million explanations or guesses about why drivers hate bike riders. I always think about how and why so many people hate vegans. They have made a life choice that makes other people feel defensive and then mad even though it is personal, harmless, virtuous, even valuable to society.

I’m so sorry. It’s unfortunately time for you to learn about the Trump Administration’s efforts to sabotage the upcoming elections. I’m genuinely very sorry.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. Now do betting markets.

Pew tested AI synthetic surveys against actual survey data. Conclusion: “This experiment taught us that, at this time, AI models are not an adequate replacement for traditional polling on topics of broad public importance.” This is an all time bad idea. No need to hedge with “at this time.”

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

The oft-leveled accusation that the Trump administration's "anti-antisemitism" campaign is trying to expand the definition of antisemitism is wrong. They are trying to shift the definition so that it is solely about Israel, to shrink it more than to expand it.

The White House accord on AI that was signed by all the big tech oligarchs today misspells United States as “Unites States.”

The entire article is fantastic, but the writer's definition of a trad wife is *chef's kiss* perfection. "Those are conservative women who dress like the women in The Sound of Music, but without the opposition to the Anschluss."

Hot take on these e-bike bans: 1) They are BAD. 2) They respond to conflicts with ebikes (not just emotos) baked into the American regulatory system: bike & ped conflicts with machines that go too fast. So, pressure for bans will GROW over time, and the bike v moto distinction won't stop it.

Not just pedestrians, even! Bike lanes increase safety for all road users. Bike lanes reduce the number of people going to the hospital, suffering life-altering injuries, or being killed. They save families from tragedies that can be felt for generations. govfacts.org/housing-infr...

Adam 🍎@adapples.bsky.social

Bike lanes arguably do more to protect pedestrians than they protect cyclists. (Shorter crossing distances, better visibility, traffic-calming effect etc)

I have never seen a shred of evidence for this. I wonder why it is so attractive to some people. Note: A bunch of bots triggering you on social are not "evidence."

"why are liberals so on edge about voting abstention?" because bernie-or-bust was a real thing & it cost us 2016

I'd say "unbelievable" but I so believe it. Still the self parody is strong with this one.

The three cardinal rules of communication: If it’s important, say it simply, repeat it (at every opportunity), and ask as many other trusted people as you can to also repeat it. This is what works. Trust me on this…I’m a communication scientist. Seriously.

Blogging beats doomscrolling any way you slice it.

Lindsay Beyerstein@beyerstein.bsky.social

Blogging, podcasts, and wikipedia were never considered the equivalent of slop in the pre-AI. They were often low prestige forms of writing with less quality control than big publications, but nobody thought they were thoughtlessly mass produced. They were/are the labors of individual creators.

For Musk to be an issue, Dems must make him an issue. #Messaging

Piker, an idiot who doesn't like Democrats and who most normal people do not know is a litmus test for Democrats. Musk, a virulent racist, the richest man in the world and one of the GOPs top donors is not a litmus test for Republicans. Siiiiiiigh

It's going to take years before we even have the tools to repair the republic, and that's if everything goes right.

Let me be a Debby Downer here: it will take more than 2 consecutive terms to slightly rebuild our government because the damage these guys have inflicted on every department & agency is *enormous*. Don’t look for a quick fix.

Maybe, if all goes well, Ds will hold both the Senate and the While House. That combo can appoint Supreme Court justices, and the Court can reinstate the Voting Rights Act. Eventually. Any other way? Anyone?

This year is the last year that Rs will not have a lock on the House, because on 2028 and beyond the new racial gerrymanders will be in place in red states. The Solid South rides again. Say goodby to Congress.

Alas, there are life changing consequences, but for others.

Motorists think they're hiding it, but it's so easy to see. There should be life changing consequences for people playing with phones while driving because their inattentive recklessness has real world consequences for those outside of their cars.

America's true friends are those who stand up to the bully in the White House.

Mark Carney@mark-carney.bsky.social

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame.

Pretend nuclear has delayed so much renewables.

Simon McGarr@tupped.bsky.social

This is a complete distraction. Ireland cannot build a nuclear power plant fast enough to matter. Making a decision to do so would excuse punting on all the wind and solar things it can and must do. This is a lobby project of the tech industry to have something to say when building data centres.

Something I love doing is talking about fossil fuels as "19th century technology". Coal plants and gas plants are machines from CENTURIES ago. The combustion engine is silly. It gets people thinking about what modernity means but also, importantly, it makes fossil fuel guys mad online

Check their campaign finance reports. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it."

Ami Fields-Meyer@fieldsmeyer.com

It’s bizarre we haven’t seen more Dems stake their campaigns on this. People see data centers and actions of AI companies as incursions of invading armies into the sovereignty of their daily lives. Electeds who champion this will be greeted as saviors, local heroes. Odd to leave that on the table.
