Re: amazon Boeing 767 at MIA: Note how at one point during the approach, both airspeed and altitude has increased, so total energy increased. That requires a significant amount of thrust. That is, obviously, strange, during approach.

I implore everyone to read Paulina Rowinska's excellent Mapmatics book. It's a great and easy read for non-science people, and goes into detail of mathematical techniques, history and implications (political or otherwise) of projecting a non-zero gaussian curvature 3D surface onto a 2D plane

Sean was here@yyzbound.bsky.social

My hot take; calling the Mercator projection a “lie” and the Equal Earth projection “the truth” is nonsense. All maps are lies. Size or shape or distance or continuity has to be distorted if you want to portray a round thing on a flat surface.

Looks like a very close call to the ground staff too - especially the person on the cargo loading ramp who moved away from underneath the open door just moments prior.

We really need to stop calling LLM's AI and instead call them "text generators". At the point of usage there's no intelligence involved. Calling them AI means buying into the framing of tech companies. "Stochastic Parrot" may be fine, as well.

very interesting thing just happened: EWR had a complete ground stop due to “thunderstorms” despite no storms in a 200 mile radius. The only flight to leave from EWR in that window? Air Force One. sure looks like Donald Trump just shut down EWR for 4 hours so he could watch a soccer game!

Honestly, all these posts blaming the pilots (both "probable cause" type posts and the worse "definitely pilot action" ones) are so testing my patience - especially those from people who are supposed to know better. Garbage like this was said about the Lion Air and Ethiopian pilots as well.

weird to me that this is what folks are going for and not the "they never bothered with the SIAB inspection" part

Ffs! Stop blaming the pilots without evidence. Let the investigation be complete.

Report details a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin from 2018 about fuel control switches being installed with the locking feature disengaged on 737s (somehow not deemed "an unsafe condition" warranting an AD), and that it's similar to what's on this 787 but no defect reported on this frame.

AAIB's preliminary report on #AI171 confirms Jon's reporting that the fuel cutoff switches are at play here. Both engine fuel cutoff switches were moved from RUN to CUTOFF almost immediately after takeoff, within 1 second of each other. CVR captured audio of both pilots denying having touched it.

The CVR exists to tell us what the pilots said in the minutes leading up to an accident. It is clear they identified the problem & denied touching the switches. I’d like to see a transcript of their exact words following this exchange. And I want to know what else could affect the switches.

Jon Ostrower@jonostrower.com

There is a good amount of detail in the 15-page report, but these are the key paragraphs. @theaircurrent.com's report for reference: theaircurrent.com/aviation-saf...

I wish AAIB would have published the CVR transcript as well. That one sentence regarding the pilot interaction about the cutoff switch is giving rise to too many ridiculous speculations that the pilot is to blame. The investigation is ongoing and I hope people refrain from assigning blame.

We're channelling our inner @tmogriffons.bsky.social and posing a quiz question. 👆🏻 What's the connection between the Shorts 'Skyvan' and RMS Titanic? Hint: it has nothing to do with the ship (or plane, for that matter) hitting an iceberg. And we'll need that answer in the form of a question.

Last Friday, the Trump Administration announced an EO directing FAA to repeal the ban on commercial supersonic flight over the continental US and replace it with an "en route" noise standard for sonic boom. Why this is likely to boomerang on manufacturers. (🧵) www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

This will require the FAA to alter 14 CFR § 91.817. It is unclear to me if that can be done without issuing a NPRM and taking comments and such. Of course, if the outcome is known, the process may not matter. Also of note, Boom is skipping the Paris Air Show this year.

The issue with ruling by executive order is it can be just as easily undone. Planemakers can’t develop multi-billion dollar aircraft programs without future operational certainty. Trump just repealed the supersonic flight ban over the US by executive order. www.cnn.com/2025/06/05/t...

Wait, can we really say America led the world in supersonic aviation when in fact their focus has been military applications? The two supersonic airliners that ever existed were far from American.

What's more likely under a 12 month deadline? The overland flight ban gets lifted before safeguards against sonic boom are put in place. That may be industry's goal, but a "let them eat boom" approach is unlikely to be good for either the public or industry. (END). theicct.org/publication/...

I'd rather prefer calling it the 24hr clock (wth is "military" time!? 🤦‍♂️), and yeah most of my conversations (esp if it's written communication like text/email) are in 24hr clock times, while oral conversations flip between using 24hr or 12hr time suffixed with which part of the day I'm referring to

Shawn Gallagher@altitudeyes.com

*Question for everyone:* Do you guys use military time (24 hour clock) or a 12 hour clock (AM and PM)?

Funny story: a few yrs ago, I unsuccessfully tried switching to decimal time (day split to 2 parts, each part has 10 decimal hours, each hour has 100 decimal minutes, and each minute has 100 decimal seconds). Was interesting to manage my own time, but communication was a mess!!
