Well, I learned something horrific today.

If nothing else, two fun facts you might not already know: (1) The Tragedy of The Commons is a specific, essentially wrong paper by a guy who turns out to suck, and (2) exploitative scholarly publishing is basically traceable to one guy, Robert Maxwell, father of Ghislaine.

Today a student asked me about homomorphism vs homeomorphism. So of course I talked about the Nicene Creed. #ChidiMoment

I have my multivariable calculus students make memes each term. There's always something fun in there. This year's cake is taken (so far) by the phrase "linear algebra truthers".

Some people were making me mad on the internet so I wrote a blog post about it. On the different reasons for people have for being left wing and how people manage the psychological tensions of the fact that they come apart. sootyempiric.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-...

My dad's celebration was today. One of the last political acts he did was to organize his neighbors in the retirement community to participate in the spring No Kings. And today, leaving the service, we happened to drive past his old place. 20+ octogenarians holding signs.

Zorn was a socialist in pre-war Germany. He spoke in a raspy voice ever since Nazi thugs battered his throat in a 1933 street fight. But he lived to the ripe old age of 87 and died in Bloomington, Indiana. So yes: let's name more things and people after Zorn!

He has Hollywood leading man looks and he speaks with moral clarity. That's it, really.

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

Normally I get mad at Google Photos for serving me emotionally intense "memories". But this is making me happy-cry. (Sorry, other train commuters.)

I didn't have the heart to post about this last week. But my dad passed. He was a genuinely amazing person. Wonderful man and dad and grandpa. The definition of a wife guy (complimentary). Anyway. Here's some info about him. www.atlantafuneralhome.com/obituaries/R...

"So what does it mean to be in the union? It means improving your material circumstances, thereby increasing your personal and political freed--" "Dr. Cooper, I think the question was about unions of sets." "Oh. Right." Putting the Theory in set theory over here.

What's hilarious is (at least since 2018) the California imports that Texas conservatives complain about tend to favor the GOP and it's the Texans from birth who vote blue. Those performatively-Texan asshats? Newcomers to a man.

Shaming Talarico for ordering a potato and egg breakfast taco in Texas is a stunningly effective way to prove you don’t know shit about Texas

The cheesesteak is only 75% of Philly's personality. The other 25% is roast pork with broccoli rabe.

we invented it but didn't make it our whole personality. glad to see the credit is belatedly going where it belongs but i'm not going to make a big deal of it.

I would like to see more men talking about how to and peer pressuring each other into calling out misogyny and rape culture. Going against social norms is hard, and it helps to share tips and support.

My take on such things is a mashup of Bloom's Taxonomy and Saint Paul: "When I was in high school student, I recalled as a high school student, I understood as a high school student, I applied as a high school student; but when I became an adult, I put away high-school things."

I don't understand why you would want to "memorize" anything but the first quadrant. I also don't understand what there even is to memorize besides "big x go right, big y go up".

Hwæt.

Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’. The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English. (Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...)

Legit, Romeo and Juliet in 9th Century English would be an incredible thing to do. I would watch the hell out of that (with subtitles).

a lot of people act like there's a trade being offered where we give up trans athletes in sports and in exchange fascism is defeated forever

These dudes are so fuckin high on their own supply. Asimov wrote a version of this (The Evitable Conflict) and it was way more realistic than these bozos can come up with.

That's, that's not how crossing an air gap works. Please stop trying to scare people with a scenario involving transmitting a trillion parameter model across an air-gap with a channel that is less than 1 baud. Orders of magnitude less.

Who wants to join a writing group with me so I can get my math papers finished? My available times are Sunday 5:30-6:30 a.m., Monday-Thursday on lunch break unless I have grading or a faculty meeting, and Friday from 1:30 to oh shoot I have to pick up my kid o’clock.
