My timeline is a mix of (1) Brazilians saying to avoid amplifying trolls, fascist supporters, and bad faith actors, along with Americans praising that advice, and (2) Americans screenshotting an attention-seeking US pundit who says it's bad to care about elections in other countries.

The players who need this war to end * the least * are Britain/Europe. Don’t get this idea that people like Matthew have that it’s some terrible and un-strategic burden for us, and the sooner we save the Russians from themselves the better.

John Springford@johnspringford.bsky.social

Zelenskyy said five days ago that freezing the conflict on current lines, with security guarantees, is "a real way to end this war". www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

I’ve also never understood the so-called “realist” case for cutting this conflict short by doing a deal with Putin. The truly realist approach is to bleed him dry for as long as the Ukrainians are willing to fight.

The way that Bluesky has been demanding a Prime Minister who wants to rejoin the EU and is willing to call out Russian interference in the referendum. And then when one does, it’s all: “iT’s mOrE cOmPliCaTeD tHAn tHaT, aNdY!!!!!!”

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Finding some of the reaction on here to the 'stockpiling' stuff a bit odd. The Russians successfully firebombed the last prime minister's house! There was a cyberattack on a French supermarket a few weeks ago!

I started listening to Michael Lewis’ book about SBF the other day - not really knowing much about him except for the general outline of the FTX scandal. And was amazed to discover how uninteresting he is…

From effective altruism, to investing in Anthropic, and life in jail. Sam Bankman-Fried—the former CEO of FTX—talks exclusively to “Money Talks” from a prison phone. Listen now

The patriarch in Brothers & Sisters. Only really has one full episode at the start and makes you completely believe he was the moral bedrock of that family, but also the source of their downfall.

RIP Tom Skerritt, a reliable and enduring actor who you probably remember from...everything, basically. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Lea Michele is returning as Rachel Berry for the ‘GLEE’ reboot, Variety reports.

These three would love the world to work like this - where they can divvy up “spheres of influence”. But they’re just not powerful enough to pull it off.

BREAKING WSJ: Vladimir Putin has proposed that he, Trump, and Xi Jinping meet next month to talk about Ukraine in an attempt to negotiate an end to the four-year conflict that would favor Moscow.

Russia has suffered a million casualties just holding onto a sliver of Ukraine for four years. Three years ago, a rogue militia nearly reached Moscow and toppling Putin’s regime. Yet he’s going to dominate Europe? Get the hell outta here!

We’re a couple of months away from the Democrats maybe controlling both chambers of Congress by big margins and subpoena-ing the shit out of everyone in the administration, plus all the tech lords. And Trump’s one bad fall away from leaving this world. Just tell him to get fucked now.

The only thing that would tempt me to watch it is John Goodman

Dr. Twink, Vampire Slayer@subtlebeast.bsky.social

Ok Digger is confirmed bad. Innaritu blatantly steals from Swedish genius Roy Andersson and Tom Cruise is way way way too transparent in his Oscar aspirations. The production design is brilliant and John Goodman is fantastic but the rest is a migraine of vanity

Following up “I’m easy” with “…as that toilet wall says.”

What's the stupidest joke you most have to fight the urge to tell? Mine is not replying to questions about whether I have any allergies with 'we'll find out together, I guess'.

Seems wide of the mark given he, you know, signaled the end of the triple lock and wants to undo the Brexit settlement. Those aren’t things many people will like.

Most striking of all is that this is explicitly a very *pro-politics* speech, a direct rebuttal to the anti-politics that is so widespread. And rightly so: politics can change things, it is an admirable thing to choose to engage in and a duty for us all to step forward and pursue.

I saw Michael Palin at an event several months ago and he made a pleasantly vicious joke about how “some of us had wives to pay”, which was why Monty Python did their reunion show

The entire article is fantastic, but the writer's definition of a trad wife is *chef's kiss* perfection. "Those are conservative women who dress like the women in The Sound of Music, but without the opposition to the Anschluss."

A French military source told Le Monde that France is already carrying out undisclosed conventional military responses to Russian hybrid attacks. Asked whether Paris could retaliate militarily without making it public, the source replied: “That is already happening.”

I’m reading ‘Barbarians at the Gate’ - about the collapse of RJR Nabisco in the late ‘80s - and there seemed to be *so many dumb people* operating in senior positions

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

Yes, all his businesses failed. But I do wonder how someone this stupid continued to be in a position to have new businesses to drive into the ground. Now he's just selling his power. But who was having conversations with a guy this dumb in the 80s and 90s and then writing him a check?

I can remember a class where we had to write jingles for some reason one day 🤔🤔🤔

Jonathan Zoia@jzoia.bsky.social

My husband just told me that his childhood music teacher used to make them spend all their time writing jingles for commercials and then she left teaching to go write jingles for commercials. Like, she was running a little jingle sweatshop, right!?!

I’ve always thought the idea that Burnham was “neutralizing” Miliband by putting him in the Foreign Office was wide of the mark. Whichever Cabinet job he was given, he’d make moves.

Re Bayeux Tapestry discourse: I knew Oliver Dowden was a dense ball of mass when, amid the BLM protests and the removal of statues, he complained that the “woke” Left would probably want us to return the Tapestry to France next…
