🚨New paper!🚨 (I feel very fortunate to have been involved with this effort and wonderful team!) 🌊

Katherine Allen@paleobluedot.bsky.social

✨ New paper ✨ on subsurface ocean warming in both N and S hemispheres during the early deglaciation! 🌊 I am incredibly proud of this work, which is led by my former graduate student, Cassie Stirpe. www.nature.com/articles/s43...

In comparison to the recent revelations that Trump is abandoning the free world and siding with Russia and Putin, the bone-headedness of Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins is small beer, but I can't let it pass without comment. He says, no point to teach kids math! www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

theguardian.comWe are teaching children maths they will never use. Isn’t it better to help them speak fluently? | Simon JenkinsThe education secretary is right to focus on what students need most: the ability to express themselves. As for maths, grab a calculator, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

Ho boy, do I have a story for you. The question of how ice breaks has been central to glaciology for well over a century.

Glen@gergyl.bsky.social

Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?

Our new paper is out! How can we trace ocean currents a million years ago? During my PhD, I studied chemical signals preserved in deep-sea sediments to answer this question. But I quickly discovered that scientists don't always agree on how much we can trust them. 1/5🧵

To all #paleoceanography people: give a read to this new paper co-authored by Maayan Yehudai! 👇🏻 🧪 ⚒️ 🌊 🦣 👩‍🔬 #PaleoSky

5/5 We also developed practical guidelines to help scientists choose the best sediment cores for developing Nd-isotope paleo-circulation records. So young ocean scientists don't have to make the same mistakes we did! Congrats to Joohee and the team! Read here: authors.elsevier.com/c/1nxvX-4PSH...

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet

Yes indeed, scarier than climate change. Solar geoengineering advocates are now trying to hook this to discussions of overshoot by rebranding solargeo as "climate stabilization." It's not. It sets up the climate for a destabilization of a kind that is unprecedented in all of Earth history.

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

Is there something scarier than climate change? Maybe it’s an uncontrolled solar geoengineering arms race between nations distrustful of who controls the global thermostat.

Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Very few people study air-water gas exchange, which determines how quickly the ocean takes up atmospheric CO₂. But because of marine CO₂ removal, everyone is throwing the term "gas exchange" around. So here's everyone's chance to attend a gas exchange meeting to learn and share. www.gtws2027.se

The “Cottonwood curse” may be the new “Bristlecone curse” after this…

Raider@iwillnotbesilenced.bsky.social

The Trump administration’s actions resulted in the destruction of the largest ancient Cottonwood tree on Indigenous territory in Arizona. This tree, known as the “Grandmother Tree,” was 250 years old.

Congratulations to #quartz. I have learned much from the secrets locked within your lattice. And I will probably suffer from lifelong nightmares that involve dissolving you with HF.

Turns out we don’t have to invoke weapons of mass destruction when talking about ocean heat uptake. The ocean absorbed a record-breaking 23 zettajoules of heat last year, equivalent to 40 times the energy used by humanity. It’s not going to end well.

All latitude bands outside of the Antarctic saw above average temperatures over the last 3 months. The tropical warming is notable, which is partly associated with El Niño. [Plot shows zonal-mean surface air temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance). Data: GISTEMPv4]

Beach ridge complex and dunes at Pointe aux Chenes, Michigan. I've got it in my slides for a case study on post-glacial rebound and other causes of lake level change on the Great Lakes, and I had to post it here again.

It was wonderful to see and talk science with Mike Kaplan, Ed Cook, Mark Cane, Joerg Schaefer, Roseanne Schwartz, Nicolás Young, Nick Christie-Blick, and several others. This is my only photo (Ed, Mike, and me, at my old haunt - the Mountain House in Sparkill, NY). My only photo: Ed, Mike, me. 2/2
