It'll be a while before we get a solid sense of the net productivity gains of AI coding agents, but one thing is certain: they make everyone much more impatient.

Today would have been Michel Foucault's 100th birthday. In honor of his Centennial, and our own, we're offering a wide variety of free content related to the great philosopher on our blog. Books, chapters, & articles will be open access until Dec. 15, 2026. #DUP100 #Foucault buff.ly/H2nyiVZ

This is a great take. Using AI to assist or generate writing opens you up to the risk of plagiarism in complex ways. Can you afford that risk?

I wrote about a reason not to use generative AI in your writing that I haven't seen anyone talking about. Once I realized this, banning GenAI in our lab's writing became a no-brainer. Feel free to share, I think this is probably useful especially for trainees: www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the...

"But ChatGPT gives me dopamine." The real dopamine is when you spin the roulette wheel in your own mind and sometimes you get an elegant synthesis of Freud, Calvino, and Sartre as a kind of symbolic phenomenology and sometimes you get half-remembered episodes of Bobby's World from when you were 8.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

Recently I was talking to some people (IRL, not online) and a question came up that nobody could answer authoritatively, but that each of us had some knowledge about. It could have been a fun conversation, but instead someone said "ask chatgpt" and that just killed it. This is life now.

heard a guy say "you have to access it through the portal" and i was momentarily struck by how sad it is that what he said is so boring :( "accessing it via the portal" should be wonderful. we deserve that at least. it should be cool to access it via the portal and instead it sucks shit

Sometimes using chatgpt for coding is like having a Terminator that trips every ten steps. It's shooting people, changing shape, doing badass stuff!! Then it trips over its own two feet and you have to pick it up. Every ten steps. Sure, a Terminator sounds cool but this feels kind of stupid.

We have long known that people retain more from doing synthesis themselves than from a prepared summary. And yet, papers have abstracts, journals have review essays, and the web has Wikipedia. People decide for themselves—not always rightly!—when to consult the full text of original sources.

Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other. Shared by @gizmodo.com: buff.ly/yAAHtHq
