The mixed blessing of avoiding enough of the discourse that the first take you hear is like "The real problem with Baby Eater is his blender. Clearly doesn't give a shit about artisanal bladesmiths."

This already looked good years ago, but the glow-up for this version is insane. I wanna play it on a cinema screen.

Shroom and Gloom is out in Steam Early Access! The double-deck building roguelite with fungal foes to battle and cook is unlike anything you've played before. It's a trip. 🍄

This might look like an unreasonable amount of chilli seeds to put on a parmesan crisp, but personally I appreciate a rate limiter on how fast I would otherwise eat what is ultimately a box of fried cheese.

"We call these boomer shooters." "Right, cos of all the booming." 'Oh, no that's not why." "Then why?" (Deep breath) "So in the aftermath of the second world war..."

The more actionable takeaway is how to make them do the charging-up-a-pounce butt wiggle, aka the best thing any creature does. The formula is: - they're tracking something - they lose sight of it - they know where it will next emerge

The humble bar graph taking a bold step into 3D here, while never losing sight of its passion: clearly showing which numbers are bigger.

I had never imagined Merchant Ivory films was just named after two guys called Merchant and Ivory. It was olden times! I think I just assumed they were killing a few endangered animals between takes as a side gig.

More videogame bosses should look at your cursor like, what the fuck is that. What are you doing with it.

Sick this week, so I finally started F1 Drive to Survive. It's good but there are a lot of smug young men in it and so far only one of them has been put in the bin.

The episodes are in a deranged order on Netflix, so I accidentally watched S8 first, and am now going back to S1 with the vague gut feelings of a midrate fortune teller. Guy who does not feature in S8: I just think I'll go further at [team who does not feature in S8] Me: I fear not, Daniel.

Deadloch season 2 was great again - truly Australia's answer to The Thick Of It in the swearing Olympics. As before, the mystery is juicier and better told than you expect from a comedy. And it has a knack for making fun of eccentricities without feeling unkind.

I think this April fools was amiably aimed at anyone who's over-attributed our games to me alone, but God it's so deadpan even I start to worry if I was serious at points.

One of my favorites is now 10 years old! @pentadact.com in addition to doing a very obvious and silly jape, put "Untrue" as the first word in his video title! Thank you for setting a wonderful standard. youtu.be/k_jG2bbNpsA

I can't speak to their overall cultural impact, but I do think if Dickens had come up with "Hi it's me you're all in danger" before Charli XCX, A Tale of Two Cities would have opened very differently.

Whether or not he ever would have found his way to "crazy girl shit gonna go spring breakers" will be debated by academics for centuries to come.

We have a Discord now! It's been lovely so far. Today in the Heat Signature channel, someone figured out how to do a Hijack mission (take out all crew and deliver the empty ship) without breaking their Ghost Vow (never be seen or harm anyone) and we were all like what. discord.com/invite/3M8pf...

Good morning! I wrote a book! @flantz.bsky.social called it “the definitive history of procedural generation in video games” which is just about the best thing that can happen to a book. Tell your friends, enemies and book-loving acquaintances!

Mike Cook@mtrc.bsky.social

I've written a book! Next Level: Making Games That Make Themselves is the story of procedural generation - the tech behind games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. It's about how it works, the games that use it, and the art and magic behind it. Out May 7th, in bookshops: linktr.ee/next_level 🎲🔮

I wasn't planning to, I'm gonna make it so items just get unequipped before the sale. But as mentioned, an item's stats are just a list of the things they buff on their owner. One of them is price. In this game, people also have a price. So the items you wear are all "buffing" your price.

I've had bugs turn into features before, but I've never had "it's a bug that this feature works, it just sort of made itself."

The same night I made this, I discovered our stats architecture had emergently manifested a feature I hadn't implemented yet. If you sell a member who has items equipped, the sell price reflects the value of the items too. I never coded that!
