There’s a lot of talk about Oscar eligibility for [various categories] re:You Can See Everything, but we need to talk about whether Nathan Fielder can be nominated for the way he says the word “annealed??”

Loving the swing on DIGGER from “what a bomb!” to “what if it’s good, actually!?”. Still can’t decide if I liked it. Might even have to see it again…

Basking in the afterglow of an all-timer Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this past weekend in Golden Gate Park. New and old favorite artists singing new and old favorite songs, hanging with new and old friends, in perfect weather. All the things a festival should be! #HSB

Water stations are the greatest innovation in warm-weather festivals in my lifetime. Brought a one-liter bottle and stayed hydrated all weekend. Honorable mention goes to tasty packaged iced coffee, nicely counteracts the drowsiness induced by sun, beer & pot.

Sorry, sorry, I like Don Cab okay but sometimes math rock sounds like three different cars tuned to different stations with their doors open in an underground parking garage, but it's okay because the most normal men in the world are here to explain how time can be fun to you.

Can’t tell if lack of baseball posting in my feed is just because the M’s are out, or if there’s genuinely not a team to root for as fun as last year’s Blue Jays

i'm reminded that when "social media" started it was called "social networking," and i'd always thought the shift was arbitrary. but i recently realized it's because networking is concrete, it's a direct method for forming relationships. media is definitionally an abstraction of reality.

Spending the afternoon in Santa Monica to beat the heat before night 2/3 of Jeff Parker IVtet. LA: not bad! Especially thanks to rail transit (shout out to Metro A/D/E and Metrolink VC lines)

Great show from Bill Callahan and his crack band. Very impressed by Matt Kinsey's atmospheric electric guitar work & Jim White was a monster in the skins. We left the venue belting out: 🎵 I'm not a robot and I never will be I'm not a robot and I never will be 🎵

David Bowie wore the famous zig-zag ‘lightning bolt’ face make-up just once: for the Aladdin Sane album cover shoot in January 1973. Just that one time.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Again, woke 1 was not silly. None of the things that Black people asked for were inappropriate or unnecessary. Y'all just stopped listening to Black people, and started talking amongst yourselves about what you thought woke was. Then you called that silly. You listen to nazis over Black people.🤷🏿‍♂️

My newsletter continues this week with a piece asking some folks who play the music of Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia the question of why GD/JG connects with them and why the band is still connecting with people six decades on. www.isthisrealpdx.com/the-enduring...

Really good trolling would be to go see Picnic at Hanging Rock with some friends and then 35 minutes in get up and leave the theater and disappear and never be seen again by anyone in their entire life

Watching my first Fox World Cup broadcast after watching a bunch of games while in Ireland…oh god these commentators are terrible (and I don’t even know anything about this sport!)

My favorite film so far this year!

QueenCityJamz@queencityjamz.bsky.social

Saw Ildikó Enyedi's SILENT FRIEND (2025) last nite & was blown away. It's 3 stories spanning a century and set around a gingko tree in a college campus in Germany. It had great performances by Toney Leung & Luna Wedler, multiple film formats, small dose of Léa Seydoux & loads of heady ideas.

Caught both of these, with Martel & her cinematographer on OUR LAND at the Roxie a couple weeks ago. My second viewing of THE HEADLESS WOMAN; I feel I’m barely scratching its surface, yet remain enthralled

Justin Chang@justincchang.bsky.social

I wrote about the remarkable new documentary OUR LAND, the magnificent restoration of THE HEADLESS WOMAN, and the furious moral clarity of the Martel Cinematic Universe: www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

To give an idea of Sabastian Sawe's running pace, if you ran a marathon at that speed you would be finished in less than TWO HOURS

OK gonna do a thread! OTOH, the idea of the "pirate" was used as the photo negative to define the idea of a legitimate sovereign in a developing international order, and express ambivalence. One of the most popular piracy memes from ~1550-1700 is an apocryphal tale from Cicero by way of Augustine.

Megan Wachspress@meganwachspress.bsky.social

Literally wrote a dissertation on the legal construction of piracy and how it informed early modern political theoretical (& legal) theories of criminal punishment. THIS IS MY MOMENT, GUYS! (Spoiler: piracy was often tool of statecraft in practice but dark other of legitimate state rule in theory)

Spent the last two magical evenings with Gillian Welch & David Rawlings (with Paul Kowert on bass, and Grahame Lesh joining for the encore on Friday) at the Fox as they channeled the Dead. Still levitating.
