The monsoon is over, and almost 40% of the 74 major Indian dams are at their lowest late-October level in eight years. The typical dam is usually 0.4 m below full at this time of year, but this year it's 3.5 m. @diagramchasing #dataviz

Written journalism is not looking healthy. Just can’t reach an audience, unless it’s funded by readers and has its own distribution channels. (Case in point: me, I used to read Rest of World stuff when I saw it on feeds and it was quality but if I don’t see it…) www.semafor.com/article/10/2...

semafor.comRest of World faces prospect of shutting downThe six-year-old digital publication has seen the social and web search traffic on which it depends evaporate.

This is a huge blow. I love @restofworld.org because it is one of the few places that covers human-centered stories about subjects besides pure technology like labor, society, and local economies outside the Western bubble. It's important for countries like India. Their design team are also stars.

The next @diagramchasing.fun story will be fun, I'm very excited about it. I step out of my usual comfort zone of finding obscure data with code/scraping to radio receivers, interviews, primary data collection, and even a research visit to my local meteorological observatory. Out in a few weeks!

DYK that India, which prides itself on being the world's largest democracy, has the concept of "designated protest sites?" If you've not sought permission to protest in them, you can be detained. It used to happen right outside parliament, and now they've shifted it 10 km out. A map #dataviz

Spotless capture today. I believe there's a sliver of Oman visible across the Arabian Sea in the top left corner. #amateurradio #satellite

I finally got myself an RTL-SDR receiver and today afternoon tracked the Meteor M2 satellite. With an antenna strapped to the end of a mop, I dangled off the edge of my balcony and got this beautiful reading of almost the entire Indian peninsula. #maps My mind is blown!

New: Macklemore says Robert Kraft — who owns Gillette Stadium, where Macklemore & Ed Sheeran were to perform later this month — called Sheeran. Kraft rallied other owners together behind an ultimatum for Sheeran: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you won't be allowed in our venues.

India's Met Department draws a daily cloud-cover chart for 1,243 weather stations and they are made to look like a real sky with chunky white pixels. We've been saving them since February and turning those pixels back into numbers. Saying hello to bsky with a video of how it works. #dataviz #maps

I want to do more! Amateur radio folks, what should the next investment be? I am using a stock V dipole antenna and the RTL-SDR V4.

This is the before! We've been logging our word game results into this every day for the last 2.5 years. It has a startup time of around 30 seconds and is very prone to error 🫠 Made no sense to keep it any longer since the backend is anyway just a Google Sheet.
