Here's an actual challenge: what things are proveably *worse* now than they were when you were born?

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

basically everything is better, but millenials have fallen into the "things were better when I just happened to be a child" trap

online leftist: oh you think "voting* does anything? *chortle* real life leftist org: that concludes our vote to move forward with the vote to denounce the representative from the eastern chapter, who is alleged to have voted. of course the national caucus will vote on whether to override this vote

opsec tip: if authorities demand to see your phone, quickly give it to the nearest toddler. They will instantly wipe it and also lock it with protocol known only to Apple’s internal security team.

one of the many reasons it’s helpful to be a movie nut, is that I am very familiar with the mental gymnastics required to think “this is objectively cool, but also promotes fascism and was funded by blood money.” You see I have watched *any action movie from the 1980s*

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

I've instructed Claude to create a social media bot that replies to every positive mention of AI with some new variation of "using AI and calling yourself an artist is like ordering a hamburger from mcdonalds and calling yourself a chef."

the lesbian bar story and reactions confirm my theory that a lot of people, especially white people, latch on to “ableism” because it’s poorly defined and is an easy way to get marginalized voices points

This is different from racism or sexism. A world where black people and women are treated the same is achievable. A world where all disabled people have the same life experience as abled people is impossible, without sci-fi technology to cure their disability.

The thing about disabilities is that they suck and make life harder. That’s simply how it is. It’s good to give some reasonable accommodation but your life simply isn’t gonna be the same as someone without your disability.

I feel like this is what separates fantasy writers that have the juice from those that don’t. A lot of aspiring SF writers will give every single thing in their world a flowery made up name. Meanwhile the greats know you gotta have some guys named Luke or Tom

"yeah the whole film career doesn't pan out at all, because you have ADHD and probably some other stuff. In like 15 years they invent a way to make movies entirely with your computer though, so that's neat"

my personal opinion is that transgender people should be able to play on any gendered team they want because sports don't really matter - especially school sports. But this isn't a hill I am willing to die on and I recognize this isn't really a popular sentiment

What *is* a popular sentiment in this country is "people should be free to live their lives how they choose, and not be harassed at work or at school." That's the winning message. That's how you get people to vote for you while also expressing pro-trans sentiment.

speaking as a real AI Artist I continue to be annoyed that this "pretty brunette mid 20s woman" ChatGPT Image prompt keeps getting treated like she's one of the robot women from Ex Machina

the truth about bin laden is that he is a lot more like elon musk than fidel castro he was a stupid horrible wealthy man who believed in nonsensical and horrible right wing bullshit, and he killed a lot of people because of it while not even accomplishing his own stated goals

you are offended by this because you hate AI anything I am offended by this because they did such a bad job making it. Like her face doesn't even look the same! This is just "generic AI woman" face.

Tilly Norwood has been billed the first AI "actor" in Hollywood which raises questions about what awards synthetic performers should be nominated for. In an exclusive chat with CNN's Elizabeth Wagmeister, Tilly Norwood responded to questions about winning an Oscar.

I’m not a Nerd and I’m actually pretty dumb so AI solving math problems means nothing to me I will be really impressed when it writes a passable feature length blockbuster screenplay

It is 2001. I am not playing GTA3 (parents won’t allow it) it is 2008. I am playing GTA4 in my friend’s dorm because has a PS3 It is 2013. I am playing GTA5 in my crappy shared apartment on a weekday it is 2026. I am playing GTA6 at night after my kids are asleep

GTAVI looks like a very pretty game that I will play for a significant percentage of my lifetime. It also looks very much like a grand theft auto video game Like halfway through the trailer and you’re driving across the city listening to two characters talk on the way to a mission.

Rockstar released their first look at GTA6 an hour ago. Twitter is arguing about race science and Bluesky is talking about boring depressing politics. Reddit is the last true social media site.

"We need housing for teachers." "We need housing for artists." "We need housing for firefighters." This command and control shit drives me crazy. Just build enough housing for people.

my biggest critique of The Odyssey, a movie I really loved overall, is how it often feels embarrassed of its more fantastical elements and tries to hide them offscreen, even when the characters can clearly see them in broad daylight.

The Scylla scene is the worst about this. It treats the Scylla like Jaws, except its a huge monster on a mountain in the middle of the day. The soldiers can clearly see all of it, but Nolan avoids showing it as much as possible. Like he's worried a CGI tentacle monster will look silly

"It would be fine if the moon were made of cheese" gets you 100 replies dunking on you for thinking the moon is made out of cheese because they didn't comprehend the word "if"

the label system is the dumbest part of bluesky hate me because of my bad posts, not because some rando labeled me “AI Lover” without me having any idea

Ben Collins has really gathered a ton of followers who are perfectly happy to go “what does a JOB have to do with GENDER, who could even come up with such an idea”, as if we aren’t all constantly bombarded with shit like this

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

I have done a gender and am now in league with Pete Hegseth for not thinking AI is revolutionary for all peoples :(

an unfortunate amount of online leftists have taken “it’s not antisemitism to criticize Israel” to mean “it’s okay to be racist against Israelis”

the fact that we end up in a war between online leftists and spreadsheet people mostly indicates that online leftists don't have jobs

Type of guy who wants a completely planned economy but also constantly disparages spreadsheet people is an amazingly common type of guy on the Internet. Who exactly do you think is going to be planning your socialist economy.

A major reason why we're going through so many neuroses right now is because the overwhelming majority of careers in the US are "spreadsheet people" and everyone is deeply insecure about this fact

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

People can’t just say this for literally years now and have the products it creates only positively affect spreadsheet people. Most people have profoundly negative experiences with this product because its utility remains pretty niche but targeted to the capital class.

There is a custom on here of defending positions of essentially libertarian self-interest (I want to speed without consequence, I should have cheap delivery food) with left-flavored language (“well the rich can pay the ticket but the poor can’t”) that I find very annoying
