For various reasons I’ve just calculated that I’ve spent over $500k in property taxes on my house. And more in mortgage payments. Over a long time. And I’m well ahead. Because I’m privileged. Absolutely. But good governance makes this easier for everyone. Vote Blue.

'As the new regime's symbols are raised above their capital, our reporters are being told that Yakko, Wakko and Dot have already sought to establish a government-in-exile. Speaking from his villa in Montenegro, Yakko was said to remark. "Farewell, my country, core of my heart. Goodbye, nurse."'

Moved to NYC in 1995, fell into a rent-stabilized 2-br on W86th St. Bought a co-op with my wife at W 111th St in 2004. Sold it to buy big house in NJ in 2008. Just spent the afternoon looking at apartments in NYC again. Meghan & I are seriously considering moving back.

Saw a small sign saying “Dungeon Crawler Carl Flash Sale” with dates and it almost broke my brain until I realized it was in the window of the a decor store/tattoo shop/taxidermy shop. And then I just felt old. Are kids really getting “Dungeon Crawler Carl” tattoos?

Watched “Raising Arizona” with my wife last night. Such a brilliant movie. Every shot is gorgeous, the dialogue is both real and over-the-top, and Holly Hunter is just perfect.

This is an all-time great The Onion article.

It’s 11:30pm, pouring rain, and we were able to get some emergency pizza on the walk home from #sea.hear.now. Last minute Asbury Park house rental for the win!

We saw a great last-minute deal on a house in Asbury Park for Sea.Hear.Now. It’s 2 blocks from the festival. Negotiated a 1pm check in & just booked it with friends. Doing it bougie this weekend. #sea.hear.now

We don't need any more discourse! Especially on stuff we knew was bad 40 years ago! There are many very accomplished Asian actors. With Academy Awards even. Yes, I misread this.

Visiting one of my sons in Pittsburgh. Couldn’t find the steps that are a shortcut to his apartment from the hotel. Decided to find them on the way back. They were very overgrown, then they were closed (ignored the sign), then they ended where a storm washed them away. Just a 10’ drop.

Decided to scramble through the hole and kind of side hill the drop, then got to the part where they basically built a road to stop more erosion. At like a 30 degree angle. Slipping and sliding down the hill. I say “adventure”, my wife says “stupid and dangerous”. But we had fun. An adventure.

Started doing serious cardio early in COVID, then grew a silly handlebar mustache. My mustache threatened to become my personality, so I shaved it. Still doing serious cardio and now have a new circle of friends from running/biking. Oddly brought me closer to my kids (now in college).

What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.

This Friday is my birthday! And my publisher just gave me some *audiobook codes* for The Dragon Has Some Complaints, so I'm celebrating with a giveaway. All you have to do to enter is 1) follow me on here 2) reskeet this post 3) reply naming one of your favorite monsters!

Unveiling the cover for THE DRAGON HAS SOME COMPLAINTS! Garrodigh is a curmudgeonly three-headed dragon who pretends to be tame so he can eat for free at the local dragon-riding academy. Unfortunately, the rider he's assigned to is... a lot. Coming Summer 2026 from DAW (US) and Arcadia (UK)!

Just back from seeing this at my local theater. They absolutely got the humor and the timing of classic Warner Bros cartoons RIGHT! I can’t believe some dumb hack was going to bury it for the tax write off.

Just walked out of a reunion for a company I joined almost 22 years ago. I left 11 years ago, after we were acquired and it was clear the new owners didn’t want me. Been acquired by the same company a second time, and it’s much better this time. 1/x

The important part is that original group of coworkers is still the best group I’ve ever worked with, and I’m reunited with a dozen of them at my new role. If you’ve ever worked at a place where everything just clicks, you understand how rare that is. Hopefully you appreciate it. 2/2

Just had one of those weird commute moments. Get on the train, there are a dozen more people than usual on the car, all 60-something couples, but the regular commuters (me) are quietly flustered. What do you mean I have to sit in a different seat today?

Looks like Grown Ups 3 is filming in town. I think Sandler is getting fond of the area. One of my sons is going to be pissed to be already back at college.

Stepped outside to check the mail, walked into a huge spiderweb, with a HUGE (3 cm wide) spider wrapping up a caught lantern fly. The spider started climbing up my torso, so I slowly stepped back, let the web come off me, spider grabbed his meal and retreated to the eaves. I didn’t scream. Go me!

Toll collection. Driving on toll roads is SOOOO much better with electronic toll collection. When I moved to the NYC metro in '95, a drive from Hackensack to Lakewood might take 2+ hours with at least an hour spent just waiting at the tollbooth. With E-ZPass just zoom through at 70mph.

Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.

Why the fight matters. Even when it seems hopeless.

Okay, but that's because you cannot evaluate the efficacy of activism in the near term, and anyone who insists that you do wants you to fail.

Oof! Biffed pretty hard on my bike this morning, hit a rock & speed & launched over the handlebars. Luckily it was on a trail, not the road, so I landed on dirt rather than asphalt. Dodged most of the road rash, but I’m going to have some interesting bruises & swelling for a while.

I am “biked 45 miles to meet my wife & in-laws on the Cape Cod Dinner Train and enjoy a dinner along the Cape Cod Canal” years old. And I’m OK with that.

And I’m going to skip over the entire Chef oeuvre, because Isaac Hayes made many mediocre songwriters sound good. South Park wasn’t always kind or decent (or even that good for a while), but I would put Matt & Trey up in the absolute top tier of in-universe songwriters.

Walking home from food truck fundraiser for the rose garden down the street. Reminds me why we moved here. A couple hundred people, mostly young kids & their parents, hanging out, listening to music, and letting the toddlers dance. It’s been 18 years of a real community. Towns fucking matter.

Gandalf (left) and Frances were taken Outside on harnesses for the first time today. They aren’t sure about harnesses, but they are very excited about Outside. Especially Frances. She keeps jumping on the sill and meowing insistently.

Porchfest Montclair. “You’re in the jungle, babe!” from the back porch of a multimillion dollar house. Best so far was INDEYEVID doing a great 40 minute punk set on basically a 4’x12’ front porch. Seriously, thanks to all the hosts.

Bought a used car for one of the twins today, and picked up dinner near the dealer from a Szechuan place that used to have a location near us. Forgot how spicy Chicken Ding can be. And their dumplings are superb. Chengdu 1 Palace is almost as good as Chengdu 2 & Chengdu 23.
