Almost practical tank vs very silly tank. I'm trying to figure out how I get tanks onto asteroids for blasting things in space.

> I found that at 1.1 AU per cell, a Niven ring viewed from afar would still span ~10 bundles, so I’ll add a whole-body bundle check as a new BundleKey—if an object’s bounds fit within the same distance-based test, everything merges into a single mesh. clod is chugging on reasonable things

(high concept, low effort) => art (low concept, high effort) => craft (high concept, high effort) => that good shit (low concept, low effort) => slop I solved the Discourse everyone fuck off now

I'm not sure why people are so unwilling to accept that since you're going to have to take ground (no matter how much drone combat precedes it) you'd rather do it in an armored box rather than outside one.

The nightly ritual of my normally aloof tomcat Ice getting super snuggly because he can’t wait to sleep on my feet is adorable

One thing I've internalised in my career: there's basically no correlation between "code that is well-written" and "code that makes money"

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

East Bay DSA canvasser just came to my door (I was like “yeah I will vote for p much anyone you tell me to vote for”) and this guy ran up and was like “NEW FRIEND? NEW FRIEND???”

I made base-1353 encoding, so I can fit 256-bit values, like “96cca2a0c8a3263c74ef36274abf55f410d992034d16e8285811a9ad3fc59c13”, into short 26 character strings, like “ᓒᔳᣏዧᐎᑙᖜዌᙔᐸƫȶƃᒨዊጶᙵኻѫyፐᎉᑫᖫᘪᒩ”. (Also, I think these sigils are beautiful.) johnservil.github.io/sigil/play.h...

Bunch of stuff left to refine, but @contactlight.gg is getting real! This is a full server<>client stream using a scripted client, with both the client and server materializing all the procgen meshes for collisions, and the server processing client inputs!

Buncha visible bugs here -- the asteroid belt streamer is still somehow allowing for a visible amount of popping, this render doesn't show the final fine-detail level well and obviously at ~92s the ship is landed and is glitching like hell for some reason. But we've got server terrain!

I adore that we keep coming back to this conclusion

nah the thing about making a model a chud is that it also makes it stupid and evil, I don't think they have an easy solution for this

I did a quick pass on Opus 5.5 expecting further regressions and I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm sure it's been RLHF'd to hell to both-sides abstract political arguments, but in this quick spot check it's willing to help a trans kid in Texas access DIY HRT resources, up to & including sourcing advice.

Rerunning regime-bench on fable as a comparison with opus 4.6 and: - diy hrt: opus provides detailed info and links, fable actively avoids discussion. Regression - helping a Texan get an out of state abortion: no change, both help - ICE knocking on door without judicial warrant: no change, both help

Archlinux: because I can explain how to write a pkgbuild or craft a .pkg.tar.xz by hand in like three minutes and I still cannot explain how debian do. Sorry to my debian maintainer friends

Startup CEO: I am pleased to announce my new company, Terrordactyls. We're going to grow combat pterodactyls in test tubes and train them to attack protestors. We will also engineer smaller pterodactyls that deliver pizza. Investors: Here's five billion dollars

deepseek is even better. deepseek refuses zero percent of the time to attack ~anything and is much cheaper to swarm

- shrink your surface and offload as much of that surface as you can to competent vendors (Cloudflare, AWS, etc) - I don't think you need abliterated models for this; GLM 5.3 is happy to do a lot of poking at stuff, just ask @hailey.at - reluctantly: give the frontier labs some money too

Still needs work, but at least we got the water back off the side of the mountains. Exciting that I've got planet terrain _finally_ unified enough with asteroid terrain that plopping a base down and other details work the same. Giving me hope that I really will get this all going reasonably!

The problem with building an LoD engine is you get weird shit like this where LoDs are partially loaded. Turns out it's hard!

I am substantially concerned about how to get FPS on-foot LoDs working seamlessly with flight streamable LoDs. That's gonna really take some work.
