society if rust had used the terms shared and exclusive from the beginning

i really dislike this purity argument, where having some kinds of restricted mutation preserving strong guarantees is the same as “doing almost nothing to restrict normal mutability”

Check it out! You can actually use Optical Character Recognition or an AI to decode that funny-looking sigil in this screenshot, and recover the complete 256-bit cryptographic value. With the hex code from this screenshot, you only get 40 bits. bsky.app/profile/zook...

Heh heh! I had previously asked my AI to use sigilcode for any BLAKE3 hashes that he wanted to mention to me. He just said this:

In addition to the beauty and strangeness of it, the really cool thing is that the SHA-256 abbreviation shown there only contains 40 bits. You can't safely rely on those hex digits from that screenshot. But the sigil is 256 bits! You can securely use the code from this screenshot.

is this a secure private sigil?

I made base-1353 encoding, so I can fit 256-bit values, like “96cca2a0c8a3263c74ef36274abf55f410d992034d16e8285811a9ad3fc59c13”, into short 26 character strings, like “ᓒᔳᣏዧᐎᑙᖜዌᙔᐸƫȶƃᒨዊጶᙵኻѫyፐᎉᑫᖫᘪᒩ”. (Also, I think these sigils are beautiful.) johnservil.github.io/sigil/play.h...

Just in time for git switching to sha256 😁

This is the reason why I designed @peergos.org to dial by key. I wish atproto had adopted that, but I know there were reasons.

🚨 Six WebPKI Intermediate CAs are compromised. This is bigger than Heartbleed, but a client-side issue. Anything that verifies certificates against public roots, like most TLS clients, is/was affected. Details, live test, patched versions and workarounds at emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com Act now.

Oh my! I'm amazed that my AIs and I might have found a way to make BLAKE3 *even faster* on arm64. Discovered while trying to work around a slowdown caused by Apple's Data Independent Timing security feature. Pack two BLAKE3 words into one register! (That was my idea. 🥹)

Haha! I asked my AI what would the greatest statistician, living or dead, say about our statistical analysis of these benchmarks. My AIs answer: Fisher said consulting a statistician after the experiment is a post-mortem. 😂

Poseidon is open for business. Get smashing! hashsma.sh This is the variant of Poseidon used in Zcash, so we really want to see exactly how much of it can be collided! (Zcash users will be safe, regardless, btw.)

Why will Zcash users still be safe? Because the Zcash cryptographers very carefully designed the Zcash protocol so that the only property that it needs from Poseidon is weak PRF, to protect Zcash users even if Poseidon turned out to be vulnerable to collisions.

Maths as a field of endeavour is turning into the Truth Mines that Greg Egan wrote about in Diaspora. That's also including the questions about whether we want to organically understand things or just have the understanding 'grafted' onto us.

So apparently there's some app on Solana that has been giving people tokens backed by ZEC, and apparently there are tens of thousands of people who chose to receive this reward. Well now there's a whole HOWTO for those folks, thanks to bentertainer and ZecHub: zechub.wiki/using-zcash/...
