I love Zohran but nyc isn’t doing shit for all the people with long covid and all the people who are about to get long covid. 🧵

On April 5, 1977, people with disabilities occupied government buildings across the country with simple demands: access to education, jobs, and public spaces. It has been fifty years since the Section 504 sit-ins, but the fight for those with disabilities continues.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

As chair of the @bkcb6.bsky.social Business Affairs and Licenses committee, we have been pushing for year-round outdoor dining for years. When it went away, so did mass support for our favorite bars and restaurants. I’m thrilled and cannot wait to be having a cozy dinner outside in December!

Outdoor dining is coming back year round. Thanks @cmrestler.bsky.social, @cmshahanahanif.bsky.social, CM Aviles & BP Reynoso. CB6 Business Affairs, chaired by @aspishakthomas.com, backed it. So did Transportation, chaired by @brooklynspoke.bsky.social & @tonymelone.bsky.social, & our Full Board.

I'm heartbroken to share that Marvin (known to readers of There Is No Place for Us as Maurice) died earlier today in a workplace accident. He was 43. Natasha (Natalia in the book) asked me to share this news because she is too devastated to do so herself. We are all in shock.

People who do seasonal work — like farmworkers — are at elevated risk of coverage loss from Medicaid work requirements. It's much harder to automate compliance determinations for seasonal work. While there are policy accommodations, documentation burdens will be worse for seasonal workers.

It's July 1st and at least 450,000 New Yorkers are estimated to lose their health care coverage. This is just the start of the mass uninsuring of low- and middle-income people in the U.S. due to federal cuts and exacerbated by states refusal to take action in tangible ways (e.g., tax the rich).

Of course healthy people are going to be better off than those living with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, depression, and kidney disease who will no longer be able to afford necessary medications or treatments.

Make no mistake, people will die as a result of losing health insurance and the blood will be on the hands of both republicans and democrats who chose to stand idly by while millions of people lose coverage.

I cannot stress enough the detrimental and life-altering impacts losing insurance coverage has on individuals and families. Health insurance is the strongest predictor of whether someone receives preventative medical care, including critical services like vaccinations and cancer screenings.

The trans sports ban are almost completely an invention of the media, conservative and mainstream. it has been years of lies, of shoddy fact checking on just completely false conservative claims, years of phony concern trolling.

However, the value of homes owned by Black families is substantially less than white ones ($27,000 vs $73,000), explaining in part why more money was recovered from white homeowners. Considering differences in lifetime wealth accumulation, the impacts may be felt more deeply by Black families.

Policymakers should opt for strategies outside of Medicaid that can more precisely target high-net-worth individuals through mechanisms like tax increases on high income earners and large inheritances instead of policies like estate recovery that disproportionately impact low-income families.

We found approximately $83 billion was recovered from beneficiaries between 2017 and 2021, or 0.6% of the total cost of North Carolina's annual Medicaid program. We found that Black homeowners were more likely to have lower value estates recovered, and more money was recovered from white estates.

Take for example, the claim that work requirements will reduce poverty. The HHS report ignores the facts that *up to 7 million people are expected to lose Medicaid over the next couple of years & *Medicaid is very effective at reducing poverty But somehow, magically, this will reduce poverty? C'mon
