A lot has been written about the new wave of Democratic nominees and there are some I have been pretty critical of as well as many I've praised but Brad Lander is the realist of the real. We'll be lucky to have a guy like him in Congress.

It would really be great if folks not affiliated with the Trump Administration could stop using "Department of War." The Department of Defense is a statutory creation, and the name is statutorily given--the administration cannot unilaterally change it.

If somebody in FDR's White House had said "we need to get back to the Jacksonian coalition", it would have sounded wild because how much the nation had changed, right? that's what I think of every time somebody says "we need to get back to the New Deal, etc" or similar comparisons.

A lot of the internet's psychoses (incl. on this site) can be traced back to people trying too hard to make themselves look cool esp to people they admire.

One of the absolute best things about New York local politics is that I've gotten to see DiBlasio, Adams AND Mamdani all address the city with their own unique take on "These are garbage bins and the trash goes INSIDE them." Very different stylistic choices were made.

I would argue quite the opposite that one of the strangest peculiarities of Chicago people is the extreme unction they take when anyone violates their extremely literal definition of who is "From Chicago."

see this is the type of faux leftist bullshit that pisses me off yeah, vandalism bothers me because I care about protecting our public goods and making sure our trains are clean and safe! that is not, and should not be, a conservative-coded take

speaking as someone living in NYC now vs growing up in the burbs, if vandalism on public transportation bothers you this much you were always a huge asshole piece of shit

When I was a kid this level of delusion and bad faith argument was pretty much the sole territory of the religious right. Congrats to the campsite left at reaching young earth-level delusion in so little time, couldn't have been easy.

Kshama Sawant dismisses the success of DSA candidates winning primaries by saying "We have seen a genocide actually come into existence at the same time that more DSA-nominated, DSA-endorsed people who are being elected" as if those two have any correlation.

Kylian Mbappe’s open letter to French people following the World Cup "Thank you. One month of emotion. Of going beyond limits. Of pride in wearing the colors of France. Of passion, above all, the same one that drives us on the field and that drives you, in front of the screen as in the stands."

You are looking for a church to join, not a political party to support. But all your friends are atheists so you can't admit you're looking for a church to join.

Actual faculty getting silenced and fired for their work from the right, and the big issue for a whole bunch of the commentariat is whether there is political discrimination against imagined faculty.

One thing I've come to realize on here is that a growing segment of Americans take gerrymandering to mean any kind of rule or policy intended to game elections or advantage a party rather then a specific term relating to the drawing of district lines.

For anyone sad about Erling Haaland leaving the World Cup I just gotta say that for much of the year he plays for a team called "Manchester City" and you can continue to watch him do all kinds of cool things all the time. It's awesome.

there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood — of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

The air feels heavy — not just with humidity, but with memory. We remember Pulse. We remember the laughter, the music, the light that was stolen, and the love that refused to die. May we keep building a world where joy is never punished, and where every soul can dance without fear.

David Sirota is just absolutely gross at this point. What is he even doing? We don't have to defend this kind of stuff. I feel genuinely confused like didn't anyone raise y'all to be better than this? Just wild stuff.

First day on the job and you want respect? Go right up to the most recognizable and respected guy in the newsroom and have him yell at you until you cry. Then it's time to send him a weepy email telling him how disappointed you were that he did all that. Shouldn't have any trouble after that.
